Default Anyone converted their D16a6 to OBD1?

I'm looking to use a conversion harness to allow my D16a6 motor and wiring loom plug into an OBD1 ecu. Specifically, I'm going to run an AEM computer. I've been told I need to run an OBD1 distributor to make this conversion. Anyone know what it takes to use a D16Z6 distributor on an A6 head?

Anyone done this conversion?

steve, i assume you are going to use the AEM EMS? if so, is the EMS like hondata in that is uses a stock ecu and modifies the curves? or is the EMS a true standalone?

i have some follow-up questions based on the answers to those questions.

I know that the D16Y8 head allows you to bolt up a D16A6 distributor. From what I am told, the D16Y8 distributor works just fine on the P28 computer.

If not, you can do the mods like people do for putting a D16A6 distributor on a D16Z6 head for a mini-me swap.

You also need a 4 wire O2 sensor for your OBD-1 conversion.

Yes, I'm going to run the AEM EMS and it is a true stand alone. Problem is, AEM doesn't make it for the CRX.

The conversion harness I'm getting allows for the 4wire O2 and the OBD1 dist. My problem is physically attaching the D16Z6 or some other OBD1 dist. to my A6 head. Changing the head is not an option right now since its recently been ported and has all new valvetrain.

ok since the AEM is a true standalone that answered my question.

actually i have one more question...are you running scca solo 1 with the car or some other "series"?

good luck in converting over to OBD1! i'll be interested in seeing some dyno plots for sure!!!

Keith,

No particular sanctioning body for right now. Honda Challenge in future. Right now, when I autocross, its in prepared. Mostly I'm doing HPDE's to get more practice for entering NASA Honda Challenge.

The conversion sounds easy enough if I can just get an OBD1 distributor that fits the A6 head.

No obd1 dist will fit you have to either cut an ear off the dist or just use like 1 or 2 bolts to hold it on.

Ok... since you don't want to search some more and use the OBD-2 dizzy that I suggest in my previous post (I'm pretty sure it work though.. you will just need the OBD-2 harness plugs as well) I will suggest one more thing.

Knowing that the Y8 and A6 share the same bolt pattern you can put them on either head and it fits fine. You REALLY want an OBD-1 one though don't you (don't trust the OBD-2... fine). The CX/DX/LX OBD-1 dizzy's ALL fit the A6 head with no mods. They also fit the Y8 head (duh). The ONLY odd one is the Z6 distrubutor and head.

THAT was the info I was looking for. The only reason I'm not going with an OBD2 dist is because no one make a harness to make it work and I don't want to have to mess with the unknown right now.

For the CX/DX/LX, are they all MPFI? I assume I need an MPFI dist.

you can use an obd2 dizzy with a obd1 ecu and it will work fine.

you don't have to make a switch to obd-1 for the ems to work. you can set up the obd-0 distributor in the aem ems software. although it is much easier to just download base maps to start with rather than having to mod them right away.

AEM obd-0 distributor set up

Yes, they are MPFI. I think everything 92+ is MPFI.

What conversion harness are you going to be using?

A guy names Jason on the board here sells them. Found it in the Best Buys forum.

Adam, Thanks for the heads up on the AEM info. That's one less part I need to worry about.

Yeah, that is a good alternate to use the OBD0 distributor and set it up through the AEM.

Talk to 'The Shocker' on here, he converted to OBD-1 with his d16a6 to use hondata. I believe he used a y8 dist. with no problems.

Correct, but i think he used a z6 distributor with a OBD1 DX ecu, that hondata supports.

I used a D16A6 block and head, with a D16Y8 distributor (re-wired to fit OBDO harness). The ECU was a P06 (92-95 DX) Hondata S200. And I used Blown90hatcH's conversion harness. Hope that helps.

I was on my every day tires, 190/ 60/ 14's (HX wheels) and didnt get any traction and only had 2 runs that night. 14.501 @ 96.2 and 14.49 @ 96.7 with 2.38 and 2.41 60ft times.

oh yeah... and these were all motor... not on the unit.
