It's really sad to hear and read about...
all the ITRs that are being stolen every day. It is my affordable dream car and I really want one several years down the road (probably 3-5), but at this rate, it seems there will be none left by then. I wonder how many R's are still left in the streets today, and how many there will be several years down the road. After riding in one, I decided I had to get an ITR or at least a ITR engine from Japan to swap. Does anyone know roughly how many ITRs were made in Japan, and if there will be some engines left to import a few years down the road?
mine still on the street !!
ITR engine = ITR ... not really
edit not just the engine makes ITR a good car, there are other parts involve

Yeah, I'm in the UK, you guys seem to have a lot of Tegs stolen, hate to sound dumb but why is this, is it because Tegs are rare in the States or are they a lot better that your domestics?
It's because the ITR's are limited production and the parts are expensive to buy.
There's high demand, but people don't want to pay, so instead, they steal them.

because honda were stupid enough to make all our ITR parts fit into civic.

The Tegs a bit of a sleeper over here, not may people know what it is, those that see it don't really care. A lot of people just think it's a Celica or something. There's quite a few over here, having said that the States is a lot bigger so I guess sightings are rarer.

apples to oranges...
straight line speed? brakes? ability to turn?
Theft is partially to blame on the shared platform that Honda used (uses) to help keep costs down.
That and idiots that steal...

I agree. The ONE AND ONLY reason I did not buy an ITR is theft. Not cost, not insurance, nothing else but the threat of theft.
I was going to buy one about two years ago, cash ready until someone posted about getting carjacked at gunpoint for his PY R in CA.

It's party because they are so common. When it comes down to it there isn't much of a visual appearance different between an ITR and lower based models. Sure there are tons for us (integra enthusiast) but for a police officer, nah. When someone reports a stolen vehicle like the integra the cops pretty much close the case because the odds of finding it are so slim. They get stripped completely to the shell in a matter of hours. It's like like why luxury cars aren't stolen as often as common cars. That is IMO anyhow. I'm sure I could have explained how I feel about it better.
I agree that if a lot of the ITR parts didn't directly bolt into other honda products they might be less of a target for theft but it was also a smart idea if everyone in the world had respect for the R.
anyone feelin me?

exactly.
think how many millions of dollars Honda would lose making the parts NON-interchangable. it would mean different assembly lines and such. different molds, different... whatever, you get the idea.

Why are cars stolen? Two reasons:
1) Amatuer thieves steal primarily for the chance to drive the car
2) Professional thieves steal for the money
Ignoring number 1. Let's look at how theives convert stolen cars to cash.
a) They sell them whole
b) They cutr them up and sell the parts
Looking at a) for a moment - recognize that selling a stolen car in the US is hard because our tracking systems make it hard to register and use a stolen car - the US does a good job in this case. So most of the stolen cars that are sold whole are shipped off to foreign countries where the tracking is more casual. If you add several thousand dollars to the price of a stolen car from the off shore shipping then you need to be selling an expensive car. Hence most of the cars stolen for selling intact are expensive (BMW MB Ferrari bit luxo SUVs etc)
The cars that are chopped up for parts sale require a market for those parts. The market in the US is two-fold, one for the most common cars and one for high performance hondas like the ITR. That's why Camrys are stolen so often and that's why ITRs are stolen so often. The theives know there is a big, high-dollar demand for the parts.

Because punishment for thieves and vandalism is a fuggin joke.
Risk < Gains = High Theft Rate
Only cure is vigilante justice, make them takes their nuts in the back of their throat.

hey if you guys want itr my boy buys the theft recovery ones and fix them back up with jdm front ends and j spec motors registered. so its all back to original and stock except for the front end and the motor. well pm me if any one wants to get one. the itrs are salvage title though and they are not frame damaged in any way. he onlly picks the good ones back to repair and sell out. he has like 5 itrsa right now. 97 and up yes 97 cw
theft is the reason why i am seriously considering selling my Type R and getting the RSX R. I talked to a guy who does engine swaps and he says the swap is very hard and you a need some kinda code from a dealer to do the swap. He recently did a swap to a civic. He does alot of swaps and what not, he thinks the rsx engine can't really be swapped without going through alot of trouble. Summary...bad for thieves.
Yeah vandals are scum!! I had 2 windows smashed in one night, tried to smash a 3rd one too if I hadn't been up at 2:00am on a Sunday. Would of really busted him up if I caught him. No trace of him anywhere real strange.

Absolutely. I got robbed at gunpoint while working retail, but i didnt quit and find another retail job, it could happen to anyone at anytime really. I continued working there for over a year and never had any other hassles.
