I don't think we understand your question.

I can unscrew the gas cap and drive around, I am sure I'll trigger a CEL sooner or later but that doesn't dictate loss of performance. On the other hand, if one of my cylinder is miss firing, maybe I'll lose performance, I think.

I don't think the presence of CEL has anything to do with performance or its loss.

if the light is just on... and NOT in limp mode, i assume nothing besides whatever the problem causes

if it's in limp mode, it'll stop early on (mine stops at 6500 and no VTEC) and give you a rev limiter there.

What would cause it to be in, "limp mode," so to speak? I've not heard of that.

Basically what im asking is do only certain codes put it in limp mode, and if the light is on and its not in limp mode, are there still any power losses?

Limp mode would be something serious such as low oil pressure.

If the CEL is on and its is NOT in limp mode, I dont believe there is any loss in performance. People who run test pipes can have the CEL for the 2nd O2 sensor in the cat but it doesnt affect anything.

So to answer your question: No. Unless its serious and in limp mode.

i dont think u understand that the cel comes on for a varity of problems, some do nothing to effect performance, while others effect it a lot. if u have a check engine light u should find out what it is. if u have to ask if there is a power loss than its probably a small problem.
