LoJack - how effective is it
It is my understanding that the LoJack unit will not do a thing for you until you have contacted the property authorities. From there the LoJack will be turned on and the search for it begins. Of course the downtime involved from the point of theft to the point where the LoJack is activated may be more than enough time for the vehicle to be chopped up.
What I would like to confirm is how the LoJack signal is actually located. I was told that it can only be found if a patrol car actually is passes by withing receiving distance of it. But then that would suggest that local police must have some sort of LoJack equipment to locate the signal in the event that they do pass by a signal. Or are the signals located through GPS?

I'm not sure exactally how it works, but my friend whos a cop said the way to tell if a cop car has the lojack detector, is he'll have 4 very small(3'' tall?) antenas on his truck. You can start noticing those cop cars to determine how many have it in your area.

It's effective enough if you notice your car being stolen right away. However, that's not the case most of times. I would definitely get an alarm w/ pager function, so that you can run out to check you car and notify the right authorities. You definitely shoulnd't park your car more than 5 minutes from where you can reach it ( by sprinting). I'll be testing out some GPS systems later this summer as they come up. If you're interseted do a search and look for topics posted by me (Cosworth).. there should be a thread w/ GPS system that costs about $300.

I have lojack on my R, basically it's a device that is hidden in your car. Then when it it stolen the police can activate it and track your car down. The have a pretty % of returned cars with lojack. Lojack is pretty big in South FLorida, considering the hundreds of cars that are stolen and shipped through South America. I think it's worh the piece of mind for $500.
