Are gears from various (H series, f series) transmissions interchangable?

My 5th gear grinds, not sure why, I was wondering if I found an F series prelude tranny, could I swap the 5th gear into my tranny?
It would give me better gas mileage as well.

the gears themselves are constantly intermeshed, the problem you are having sounds like a synchro problem. You can order new synchros from your honda dealer, but as the helms says you want to order the synchro collar and synchro and spring ring as a set. Any of you guys with your helms sitting near you, I may need terms corrected. But as far as replacement, your looking at time intensive tear down of your tranny. Just speaking from experience, it is a pain, but I found it fun after awhile. Any questions don't hesitate to IM me.

you can mix and match from f22 to h23 but neither f22/h23 gears will work in a h22 tranny. the h22 tranny has thicker 2nd and 3rd gear w/a different style syncro for 2nd and 3rd
and why put a f22 5th in the h23 tranny. the 5th on the h23 tranny is nice. you dont have to downshift on the highway and the revs arent that high becides the ratio for the f22 5th is 0.71 and the h23 is 0.81... not that big a difference. the reason f22 trannys rev so low is because of their final drive. 4.06 as opposed to 4.266 in h23/h22 trannys

there is a TSB on 5th gear grinding.. i thought everyone checked for tsb's on their cars like i did. i havent taken mine in for it to be looked at to see if thats really what it is but there is a tsb on the 95 trans..

lol, I actually have this info RIGHT INFRONT of me. TSB# 95057.
TSB means that they don't fix it for free...right???
I went to the dealer for a recall for my 4WS today.

I had the infamous 5th gear grind as well..
I don't think it's so much the synchro as much as the shift pattern..
as soon as I got a DC sports shortshiftermabob
...the 5th gear grind was gone..

Why go with f22 fifth gear? if you want wider gears the best setup is to take the f22 tranny, put in the h23 final drive (4.27 i think, vs the f22 with 4.062)
XES put together some charts that shows the relationships of speeds and RPMs and the gear ratios.

You can see that the top speed in each gear jumps up tremendously in each gear. I'm guessing the reason he choose to use an SI thrid gear is because he drags his car quite a bit tightened up thrid for a bit more bit once he's outta the hole

I want the shorter gearing of the transmission I have, but I'd like the fuel economy of the F22's 5th gear.
That's why I was curious about the interchangeability.
