New Digital Camera... My first night picture inside...
Ok, more pics in a minute...
Shutter speed... hm. I tried so many, I can't even remember. This camera has been with me since about 2pm today, so I literally am just beginning with it. And you're right.. it does lack a focal point.
I think it was set to like 2 second exposure?
Yeah, it is pretty spooky.. I didn't notice that the moon was all pink-ish untill I came inside and uploaded the pictures.
Oh yeah, this is the color of my car... when it's not a pink full moon, that is...

it appeared purple due to the color balance setting and the light coming from the halogen streetlamp.

It's actually really dirty in these two pictures, but I wanted to play with the camera... came out really well IMO.

I got these tips from MTK kommander and turbopanda, because they both use Canon Powershot digicams like me. These settings are great for night shots:
-at least a 10 sec shutter speed
-f8.0
-ISO=50
-a tripod is a must
You just have to play around with it. Good luck, and show us more pics!

Cool, thanks. Exactly what I was looking for... I learned the tripod thing real fast, got some pretty blurry pictures at first. Both of those pics were w/tripod. What's the other stuff mean tho? I can change the setting easily, but it helps to understand what it means so I can experiment.

Actually the streetlamp (and all streetlamps) is HID.
It's a mercury vapor HID lamp which makes it that yellowish color. The BG-33P teal color looks very blue under mercury vapor lamps. This girl at my work swears up and down my car is blue, cuz the first time she saw it was under those type of street lamps.
Other types of HID are metal halide (greenish blue, also used in street lamps and other outdoor lamps, as well as most gas stations) and the familiar xenon HID used in cars and also in sports stadiums.

f x.x = the aperture setting. The higher the number the more range you have with what's in focus. The lower the number, the tighter the focus region becomes, meaning if you were shooting a portrait of someone at F2.0 and focused on their neck, the eyes and whole face would be out of focus...
ISO = equals the film sensitivity setting. The lower the number, the more light is required for correct exposure (longer shutter times in Aperture Priority mode). The higher the number, the more grainy the image appears (fuzzier images). My Olympus E-10 has three manual ISO settings (80, 160, and 320 - roughly equivalent to 100, 200, and 400 speed film), I leave it on 80 for the best image 'resolution'...
I'm no expert in photography, but I know a thing or two....
P.S. - one thing you might try, since you have an Olympus 5050, is to use an external flash unit (like the awesome Olympus FL-40) with a diffuser panel and experiment with that at night too. It might shut off the street lights which would mess up the exposure though...you know how street lights and flashes of light go together...
