Default ef guys opinions on which swap...thanx

ok, this is one of those "which motor is best" type questions. allthough not quite as dumb as most of those threads that get made (notice i said "not quite as dumb" lol). it may be dumb to some of you, but hear me out por favor!

i'm a broke college guy. don't have much money to throw around, but want something more powerful than the sohc zc i currently have. why do i want more power? well, that's "duh"...who doesn't want more power? why not work with the sohc zc? i don't know it's history as it was in the 89' crx si i own when i bought the car. i suppose i could do compression check and whatnot, but i'd still like something new and more peppy "out of the box".

i've been thinking about what to do for quite sometime now, and wanted "yous guys" opinions and/or comments/ideas for me. i want to keep the budget around 1500. i'm also thinking about a good starting point to begin with a junkyard turbo setup (after falling in love with my friend's junkyard turb d16a6 crx si)... here's some of my ideas:

-d16y8/z6: honestly i don't know much about the sohc vtec motors. a little more horsepower than the d16a6/sohc zc, and the addition of vtec...these motors sound like they might be my best bet for a new starting ground, somthing pretty inexspensive, but newer and little bit faster. also, i'd have to change from obd0 if i'd swap. do these motors respond well to boost? i'm guessing its pretty much the same block as the d16a6, or no?

-b18b: dohc motor, non vtec of course. the lower compression and decently strong bottom end has got me thinking about the future of this motor with the junkyard turbo i may do sometime in the future (heh, it'll be a ways off if it happens). i think it'd be a little pricy though for what i want (inclusion of motor mounts, shift linkage, axles...etc). how much for a complete b18b (tranny, ecu, etc)? probably not going with this, as the "future" turbo plans might not even come through, but still curious about this choice.

-b16a1: too exspensive right now. adding in the little things here and here (eg-500 dollar hasport motor mounts) would put me over my budget...too bad, as this would probably be my "choice" motor.

-b18c1: (see b16a1 )

-dohc zc: don't know much about these at all. word on the street is that its difficult to get aftermarket parts for the motor, and general maintanance type parts will have to be sought after from junkyard integras and the like because the motor is jdm. the price however is attractive, and i'm not totally saying this wouldn't be a good choice either.

-b18a: don't know jack about these. they're from early model integras correct? i cannot find any info on these motors, therefore i cannot comment on them. anybody help me out here on this one?

so there you guys go. my thoughts on possible swap choices. i'm more concerned about the best bang for the buck right now, but like i said, i'd like to do a junkyard turbo setup in the future perhaps, but that would be a long ways off. what do you guys think???? thanx!

umm... if you're on a tight budget why not keep the sohc zc and bulid it up? it's close to the d16a6 and there are tons upon tons of parts for them... i was in your same spot and then just decided that i was going to keep my d16a6. swapping is so expensive anyways...

you can get mounts on ebay for around 320, give or take a little. race spec motor, lives in vtec.

-b18c1: (see b16a1 )

http://tech.hybridgarage.com/tech/specs.htm - these are from the 90-91 integras. they are obd0 which would require less wiring then a d16y8 or b18b (92-93 tegs). they have low compression which is ideal for common low boost. price ranges differ, at import auto salave they had a complete swap from a 91 ls from 1200 (not including shipping) Quality place.

Ask yourself these questions.

1. Do I want to convert to obd1?
4. How much hassle do I want?
2. What is my long term goal?
3. Both the b16a1 and the b18a will be more peppy out of the box in my opinion then your zc. b16a - Imagine a 8200 redline. Someone once told me rev's kill motors, that same person had a big mac the next day. Hmm good stuff. The b18a has a more natural powerband.
8. Your on a budget. Thats when things get good.
7. boost your zc

determine your long-term goals.

I would go b18a if you want boost later down the road. It will keep you happy until you save a little $$$ for a nice turbo setup. If no boost, go B16.

From what I have seen, most people who get d-series swaps come back wanting a b-series. There is no point in dumping $$$ into a motor you will quickly get tired of.

Go with a d16z6 with low mileage put a zex cam in ****... and some head work eventually and i think that you will be happy with the results for the amount of money that you speed...

Also talk to the user MistaBone on here he'll give you some great advice... He also posts on this d series site.... http://pub143.ezboard.com/bhondadseries

my choice was a b16a1 couse its cheap and very easy to build i suggest build the head and all to be strong enough to withstand t3/t4 turbo through one of those on u should have no problem if u build it right to get at least 50% forced boost on the block if u like throw some juice to it just for low end cumbustion till turbo kicks in .i would keep what u got and save some money to build he b16a1 then after the new is in make your money back by spanking some lil ***** *** 5.0 s around.i did very quickly now im using the money i made off slow asses to finish paying my school loans off its a good buisness good luck

i have a DOHC ZC atm, and i am currently building a "Junkyard Turbo" setup.

Should be good in the end, planning to run 8psi, and going to cost me around 1200 dollars canadian for the turbo, not too bad. Should put me close to 180-200whp

I thought about all that...but finally decided...I'd rather start with something BIG. so i'm just gonna save my money for a B18C1, I'll just get a long block, and get a YS1(if I can find one) tranny so I can stay cable in my 89 CRX Si. I guess I could go B16, but the torque of a B18 is so much better.

Wow... I'll translate that for you all.

This is to "Sporkcrx"; I am sorry if I offended you! I come to this site to teach others, and to relax after a stressfull day of work. This is my hobby, and my life! If you have a problem with the way I become lax on the correct grammar of my English, know that I do so that I may relax! Just because you're too slow to put the correct punctuation in the summary while you read it, doesn't mean Ihave to tell you "I'm sorry!". Also, I am a buisness man not an "English Bitch", as long as I have money my English has nothing to do with it (editor's note: I don't know what the hell he's saying here) I can't! Two more things; 1) Stop being childish and dont forget this: "If we meet you will need it (editor's note I don't know what "it" refers to) when I blow you off the road! So chill! If you have any questions on a real subject email me at http://www.xtnjbx@yahoo.com. I'll teach you the laws of english! lol... Bye!

Hope you can understand that guys! Glad to help!
-Vash (a.k.a a college sophmore in English)
