Default do all helmets offer the same protection

When it comes to helmets, i know the price difference in them is because of the features like ventilation and such, but like when you compare a aria, suomy, shoei and all the big dollar helmets to a hjc that cost way cheaper than those expensive ones. Does a cheaper hjc offer the same protection as a more expensive aria, etc. is the price mainly because of the name. im just curious because i have a hjc and i would buy a aria if i knew that they offered more protection, but i dont want to pay 500 bucks for a helmet because of the name if it offers the same protection as a hjc. thanks for the info.

I wonder the same thing....I have an HJC CL-14. I would like to buy a Soumy helmet but it's so damn expensive? Why is that?

You pay for comfort, paint, and features.

If they're rated the same, then the protection is the same.

Assuming it's DOT and Snell 2000 approved, you're paying for features.

I wouldnt have bought my girlfriend an hjc cl-14 if I didnt think they were safe. If its snell approved then The more expensive ones are more comfortable, quieter, vent better, look better, have a better name.

yes they all are the same.....difference between a 400 dollar helmet and a 150 dollar helmet is inside padding and wind noice

SHOEI and ARAI are exspensive helmets but you here hardly any wind noise compared to a HJC or a Vega

so it is up to you.....the wind noise doesnt bother me really...my visor is always up in the first place

No, they all offer at least the same minumum protection. Some are constructed better.
The high end helmets aren't necessarily quieter either. I have an Arai Signet that is much louder than some cheaper helmets, but I wear ear plugs anyway.

i used my friends Shoei helmet one night and it was so much less noise then my HJC......

either way as long as they are all DOT approved that seems good enough for me....

kbc vr1 is a very good helmet for the money. This is out of shoei rf900, rf800, arai rx7rr, hjc POS...

I still like my rf900 the most but its more than 2x the $$.

DOT is just a bunch of ****. Its rules that manufacturers go by, nothing more. If I buy a helmet it has to be snell at least, a dot helmet wont even get you past inspection. In most cases you get what you pay for, and the hjc is a good helmet. Not quite as good as a shoei or arai, but def up there. The reason your hjc was cheaper was because they are made cheaper. Helmet House owns hjc as well as axo america, and tour master. Since they have the other products to meet overhead they can sell a competitive helmet for much less. Its like buying a ferrari or a vette, for a lot less money you get damn near the same performance, but not so many girls look at you and get wet.

My old RF800 is more quiet and actually more comfortable than my new RF900. Although the 900 is quite a bit lighter, and matches the bike, lol.

So if it is just dot approvced its no good, it has to be snell also, because i notice some helmets with dot but not snell on them. dot means it is approved by the dep of trans, what does the snell mean?

Snell-certification is more strict with regards to helmet performance in a crash, compared to DOT-certification.

No Suomy helmet is SNELL approved

You pay more money for things like comfort, weight and construction materials. Yes the Arai and Suomy helmets are that much better than the HJC and KBC

Snell and Dot are minimum requirements for a helmet, I am pretty sure the big name helmets like Arai and Shoei put a lot more money into the construction of there helmets. It's your brain you're talking about saving, go ahead and buy a cheap helmet, I wouldn't. Just look at what pro riders are wearing, that is what I always do. I ride dirt and you don't see to many, if any riders wearing kbc and hjc.

That is true. However, Snell is not the only certification that racing organizations approve of.

http://www.helmetharbor.com/snell/comparison.htm

If racers feel safe enough to use Suomy helmets, then I would feel safe enough to wear one.

Amen brother.
