The big black bar under our rear seats. Why is it there?

This was brought up in another thread but most of you might not have seen it. I think it is something that should be discussed by more people. What is the purpose of the big black bar visible once you remove the rear seats on USDM ITR's? Is it just for US safety regulations? Chassis rigidity? If it is not needed for rigidity reasons I will be removing it ASAP because I believe it weighs a ton.

That makes me think however that if it aids in a side impact that it is apparently making the chassis stronger/more rigid no? I guess it would depend on how it is mounted. It could be acting as a sort of "floating" rigidity that would only come into effect during a side impact.
Are you guys talking about the huge bracing. Its like 3 peices and wraps down towards the floor, and held on by about 15-20 bolts? I think the seat hooks actually snap directly into them as well.
If so, I took one of those off of a 97 GSR a while ago, if that bit of info helps.

It's a three piece "bar". It does not weigh much actually.
I have heard in the past that some race teams leave this piece in because it adds rigidity. I forget the source for that information though.

I'll have my interior out of my 98 ITR in a couple weeks, so I'll check to see if it's in there. I know when I had a wrecked 98 GSR I was parting out, it had them. I don't see how those bars could add rigidity besides in the side impact issue. The decription of a "floating" component makes more sense to me. I'll probably remove them when I pull apart my interior and put my R on a diet.

I saw nothing in the thread that proves that accept for some more opinions. Anybody have some pics of RTR's DC2's? Wonder if they left the "brace" in or not?

Is it in there? If it is, then it's been added to help stiffen the chassis v. a GSR. If not, it's there to guide deformation of the body at impact to prevent deformation of the passenger cabin.
Brian, yes you can see that bar in that last pic. That is my car and that is the stock bar(black piece where the back seat used to be, carpet covers half the bar).
btw, my car no longer looks like that

Dang I forgot about that pic. Good job. No it isn't in that diagram (the plot thickens).

Vintage 97 and it is here.....
FWIW, Spoon President likes the piece despite his "we know the meaning of lightweight" theory.
For a drag car, toss it in the parts bin....for road racing and daily driver, keep it on.... you never know when a Ford pickup might run a red light and SMASH into the side of your car.....
It happened to N1-R and I in his poor car....

i was told to take it out by someone this weekend , heard it weighs a ton.
i was weary on it though, i might try it and see how much it lightens , my acr is getting a cage in soon anyway so i dont need any more wieght or rigidity.

65711-ST7-A00ZZ GUSSET.R.
65712-ST7-A00ZZ GUSSET
65716-ST7-A00ZZ GUSSET.L.
Those are the part numbers for the three pieces. According to the picture it is not considered a structural rigidity part. It looks like it was designed to reinforce the rear passenger seating area in a side impact collision.
All Integra 3DR models 1997-01 are equipped with these gussets.

Are there any wires in the area? Cause if you look under the undercarriage of your car, you'll see the similar plastic peices, and there are wires beneath it to cover it up from heat and what not.
Just a guess...
Just a guess...

You had to drill thru it to install the JDM rear seats?
Would the rear seats install without that bar? If it does, then I'm surely taking mine out.

It is a rear seat mount.
Do not remove this bar if you have rear seats, that makes the rear unfit for passengers.
EDIT:
Also for daily drivers do not remove safety items from your car. That makes no sense.

My car is a street legal track car. I had a 4pt cage built for my ITR and we welded the forward 2pts to this bar, instead of welding to the floorboard. Backseat is permanantly out, obviously.
