Alright I just finished my write up on my cut-off switch. This a SUCH a simple and easy security measure, you'd be silly not to have one:

I just started up with a new hosting company, let's see if they are worth it. BTW I use a Java menu, so if you want to get to the main CourtLukens page, you will have to remove the "cutoff_switch.htm" from the link.

I will be putting up a tech section on my site here in a bit, as I write up the pages. One of which will include a write up on my JDM folding mirror installation, for those interested. I would also like to get permission to put up other HOW-TOs, for example Tom's axle replacement HOW-TO. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Good job. However, it is recommended that you use a relay because the amount of current that goes through those wires. You should be okay, as you are using a 25A switch. Anybody else who attemps this, use nothing less than a 25A switch if you must.

Yeah, I should have emphasized to only use automotive grade switches. Minimum of 25A. I'll add that here in a bit.

 

already have one, wish I knew it was there before the car was stolen... still didnt help save the window or the ignition

great post but , id suggest that you follow the wire futher down the line !. i mean its kinda easy to figure out theres a kill switch and if there stealing the car im sure they'll flip up the back set and touch the two wires together

As cheap and easy as this mod is, it would be VERY easy to have several kill switches. Fuel pump, ignition, starter, etc... Just make sure that they are well hidden.

Yeah, I said in the article that was just one area you could use and suggested the wiring near the door sill. I even suggested putting more than one switch in just for the fuel pump cut-off.

I will be doing a write up on a starter kill after I actually do it. But, I have a couple other HOW-TOs I'm working on.

Has anyone ever integrated kill switches with the disarm/unlock button for an alarm? I think alot of people may have a kill switch but not use it all the time (certainly not if they have 3 or 4 of them) because of the inconvenience. I suppose you could use relays to do this or maybe small actuators. I think that would be great to have like 6 kill switches that all switch over once you unlock the car using your remote.

The only problem I see doing this would be if a theif bypasses your alarm, it's a good possibility that all of those relays wouldn't do much anyways. In other words if a profession theif hacks into your alarm system he/she could easily enable all of the kill switch hooked up into the alarm.

This is of course pertaining to very slick car thiefs that know their stuff.

It arms itself... it CANNOT be wired around... ie you cant hotwire it at any point in the loop.

I recommend u people to slice the fuel pump wire at another location rather than close to the fuel pump itself like in the pic in the DIY guide. Some thevies will go to the source and bypass ur switch without actually finding it if ur connection is close to the fuel pump. So make time in striping the carpet, seats and use the wire by the door sills so thevies will need more time to trace the wire.

 

If there is anything at all I can recommend in here is not to post the location of your switches... but if you want to be smart one good hiding place would be in your center console under your shift boot, you can put a relay switch with a sping loaded button in that location and bolt a mount down by the shifter, so you know a specific place to press down in your boot which will trigger the switch but cant possibly be triggered while your driving.

I knew a chick with her switch there.

Another good place is the upper area of your glove compartment that nobody can really see or reach unless they knew something was there,,, behind your dash or any area in there is a good place...

you could mount something under your driver or passenger seat as well, make sure its not something really easy to reach or get to... its not something I recommend turning on and off in your car all the time because then you can possibly make it noticable to people trying to profile your ride for the pick up what fail safe's you activate before you get out of your car...

thats something I would use if i went to a mall or some location im not going to be around my car and I dont know the ****** people in the area... like my parents house where its been broken into and stolen a couple of times.
