How do I get rust off of an SS header??? Blue Away and Mother's polish didn't do it.

Well my header is the T1R old version, and it was used. When I got it the thing was all sorts of colors and had spots on all of the tubes which I thought was odd, but really never paid it any attention. Today I tried to get the thing to look like new so I used Blue Away on it. The stuff works great and does take all of the blue and purplish stuff away. I was hoping it would take care of the spots as well, but I was wrong. So now with the blue stuff gone I tried using Mother's metal polish to remove the spots. Well now my header is definitely nice and shiny and polished, but the spots are still there. I was in my garage for about an hour and a half trying to get the spots to come off and eventually I realized it was rust on the backs of the primaries and some kind of oxidization on the top of the primaries.
So now my question, how do I remove the oxidization and rust??
Also, since this is an SS header, isn't it supposed to not rust???
Sorry AJ no longer has pics of the header they sold me, but basically it looked like your normal blue and purple header except there were little spots everywhere on the primaries. The spots were kind of a brownish color on the back of the primaries and like a silvery color on the top of the primaries.
Thanks again. Please help if you have had the same issue.

hmmm interesting. What is the stuff normally used for?
Oh and I looked at my header after I went for a drive and now the damn thing is like pink chrome
Help me. Rust sucks nads.

you probably got some oil on the header which burned onto the surface.
if you must get it bling bling shiny - I would take it off and get a polishing place to do it for you.

I'm really not so worried about it being bling bling. But I would sure like to stop the rust. Rust gets worse with time, so I thought I would try and get rid of it before the whole thing gets rusted. Thanks for the replies, anyone else got a miracle in a bottle solution for rust?

I didn't think stainless steel was capable of actually rusting. Staining yes (the irony of stainless steel) but rusting I didn't think so. But I don't know a whole lot about metals and such, so can stainless steel actually rust through?

It definitely is not going to rust through, but it is getting pretty thick back there. Today when I was trying to get rid of it, my whole cloth ended up being rust colored. I wanted to avoid taking the thing off, but it looks like I'm going to sit home one of these days, take it off and try the sand paper.
I've used sand paper and scotch bright pads followed up finer grit sand paper. Worked up to 2000 grit paper and followed up with metal polish. It worked but the rust came back everytime so i just gave up and let it rust.
I'm 110% sure that the stainless steel on the header is not rusting. It may be stained from oil, fingerprints, etc. Once those get 'burnt' in from the extreme heat, it is very hard to get them spotless again.
Also, the collectors on either end of the header are sometimes made of mild steel and WILL rust. (This was the case on my jdm dc 4-1)
I'd follow the advice given above, but be aware that what you are looking at is more than likely NOT rust.

i have a JDM DC SS header and i have the same problem. i've only had it for about 4 or 5 months now, and it's all purple/blue and brown. i wish it would have stayed gold like it was for the first week i had it.
where do you get that 'Blue Away' stuff at? i'd like to clean my header up too.

here's what http://www.hpcoatings.com describes this as
THERMAL FATIGUE
Often mistaken for rust, thermal fatigue/oxidation is a problem caused by cyclical temperatures and hot gas impingement. HiPerCoat retards oxidation and heat buildup even at temperatures of over 1,600° F. Bonded onto steel, it extends component survivability by over 100 times.

Stainless steel doesn't rust, it just builds up corosion...Best way I've found to clean it, is use Wenol metal polish with a dremel buffer attachment. The thing with metal polish is, it's not how hard you rub, it's how many times, so a dremel that's spinning a couple thousand times a minute is better than you'll ever be able to do by hand....
It'll take you a couple hours at least, and once it's clean, you'll be maintaining it weekly to keep it that nice gold color....big pain in the ***!!!

Where can you get this blue away stuff? And once it takes away the blue/purple stuff, will it stay that way? Will it hurt the header in the long run?

Depends on what you coat it with....on top of that, a lot of the coatings aren't evry expensive.
You can get one ceramic coated for less than a bill, and ceramic coating will last for about as long as your car.....
