Default Anyone have tranny problems while racing???

While I race, when I quick shift from 3rd to 4th, sometimes the car goes into neutral and the revs shoot past 8000 rpms and sometimes I peg out the tach because, obviously, I had my pedal to the metal.

I've heard of couple other guys having the same problems with other 5th gen Preludes and 94-up Integras. 1st time this happened, I only had 6K miles on my odometer, and still had my original clutch. Given that my car was relatively stock (just had a intake), shouldn't my stock clutch be able to hold? I had the same problem on my 94 LS after couple years on my Clutch Masters stage 2 clutch.

When it happened again at 6700miles, thats when I ran into problems. By then, I had put on a VAFC, straight pipe, and exhaust. I had just edged out a ITR w/I/H/E by half a car and we were going at it again. This time, since it was so close, I didn't want to risk a loss and I shifted like a pro from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. All the gears engaged like clock work and then... from 3rd to 4th, the dreaded "Ultimate VTEC" hit me. The factory rev limiter disappeared and my tach pegged out and the engine let out a screech like a super bike.

It was over, my car limped home. I took it to the dealer to make good use of my factory warranty. Obviously, I put my car back to stock 1st. Anyways, some bolts on my crankshaft ripped out so they had to rethread the crank, my clutch exploded, and the found 8 bolts on my flywheel loose.

I think I bent some valves because my car still shakes at idle. The dealer thought it was normal so they didn't touch that. My syncros seem fine and the gears engage smooth at all speeds. I'm afraid to shift fast from 3rd to 4th anymore so I'm always down like half a car during the shift.

I don't wanna change to clutch to a race one yet because I only have like 16K miles right now and money's kinda tight. I just wanna know if this has happened to anyone else and if so, do u know anymore info on this "Ultimate VTEC"?

sounds like your having a problem pressing the clutch pedal all the way down... or at least to the "sweet spot"... that is where the clutch actually engages and alows you to switch gears.

I wish that was true, I'd just practice shifting some more but if the shift linkage engages 4th, isn't it in gear? Shouldn't the car start accelerating again? Instead, it goes into neutral and the rev limiter is bypassed, during that quick shift, so the needle actually hits the end of the tach. I'm sorry, its just that I have never had a problem in other gears.

you sure your not missing the gear?
your only having problems is it does it all the time. if it only happends when you race the answer is simple. DONT RACE. save your tranny... i have personally never had that problem with 4th.

i've never heard of an H22 ECU letting the engine go past VTEC. Something's up or really wrong. You sure you didn't miss 4th and hit 2nd? That would cause the ungodly screetching, the burried tach, and the feeling of neutral as your engine blows apart... ?

i have had the same thing happen to me. I know exactly what you are talking about and everyone says the same thing, that i went to 2nd gear and not to 4th. I have a friend who has a hatch with a B16 in it and also done that same sort of thing. I am not sure why it happens, and i am pretty confident that i am not putting the car in 2nd. My solution, just granny shift from 3rd to 4th.

I've accidentally put it in 2nd instead of forth and saw the same things u've seen with the tach shooting to the red line and all that. I just press down the clutch as fast as I can to relieve the engine. But with practice i dont' have that problem anymore, u could be having the same problem, because i never used to know what was going on until someone in the passanger seat told me i put it in second.

the best thing to do is practice shifting from now on practice makes perfect. Race only when you need to cause sooner or later your car is gonna be like i cant take it and itll blow.

I grind 2nd sometime when I shift from 1st. I think I'm actually throwing the shifter in before I get the clutch engaged enough, as I don't grind any of the other hears. Either that...or I shift too fast!

yeah i have had the samething happen to me! it seems to happen only when i shift from 3rd to 4th. I shift so fast that the clutch is not engaged all the way and the Rpms shoot up and it feels like the engine just fell out of the car. It is the most scariest feeling I dunno about shifting from 3rd to 2nd gear though. It just feels like it is not in 4th all the way, therefore putting it in neutral and making it hit the rev limiter. But i dunno..... i hope i havent been putting it in 2nd!!!! If i have then i am surprised i havent blown up yet. I have probably done it about an estimate of 10 times! If there is a solution to this or any additional information please hit me up! Thanks

I had the exact same thing happen ITS FROM MISSING FOURTH AND OVERREVVING 2ND. The Rev limiter soen't work when you miss a gear.

Same thing sheares the bolts off the flywheel into the crank bammm new bottom end.

There is a Service bulletin on the shiv shearing off between the crank pulley and crank which causes all this yummy damage (helped along by missing fourth gear)

Oh yeah and it sounds like you may have bent a valve or two with that idle (bring it back and make 'em fix it right).

if you over-revved like that and fried the bottom end, then you more than likely floated the valves and bent a few...take it back and make them do it right.
