I am planing om changing by brakes this weekend, and I dont have a car lift. I was going to buy jack stands, for the car, but I am not sure where I am supposed to place them after I jack the car up. I know to lift it I put the jack uder the prtruding sliits by the front fender, but cant find where to lower onto the stands, any info would help its a 97 civic coupe

i always jack the car up placing the jack on the inside of the wheel well (about 2inches forward from the slits and a few inches in) then I place the stands on the slits

yeah its probably wrong, but i havent had any problems whatsoever and been doing it for quite a while

I'm assuming you're using a floorjack.

If that's the case, place the jack under a towhook on the front of the car. Jack up the car. Place the jackstand on the jack point on the side of the car (behind the front wheel). Lower the jack. Place the jack under the other towhook. Repeat steps.

That's how I do it at least *shrug*

Yeah the slit behind the front wheels called the "pinch" is where I place my jackstands. Make sure that when you drop the car down on the jackstands that the pinch or slits settle down into the dip on the jackstands. Also I hope you are not using the factory emergency scissor jack. Those jacks should be used only in an emergency because the thread that pulls the two joints of the scissor together are known to strip = not good. Buy a decent jack and jackstands, there much handier then the scissor jack and a whole lot safer.

Try looking underneath the front of the car. There is a strong metal part of the frame(near the bottom of the radiator support) where you can place the jack. Jack the car up to desired height and place the front jackstands on the metal slits where you would use to jack to change a tire. Lower the car SLOWLY onto the jackstands and move the jack out. Then, on the rear of the car, you can visually see a hook under the bumper. Find this spot and repeat the process using the rear slits. If you have more questions PM me. This is about a good a writeup as I can come up with.
