Please help- I can't get the Steering Wheel all the way in
I'm trying to switch my steering column with another one from a 90 civic and neither one of the steering wheels will go all the way back on. It's sticking out about a half inch further and there's a gap behind it now. I think it's because the circle piece that goes on right under the wheel is stopping it. The circle fits tightly on the plastic box with the control arms (lights, wipers) but when you push the whole thing in all the way, the circle piece won't go in as far as the rest of it. An edge is stopping it and it looks like it's supposed to, but why would the plastic box push in further? The same thing happened to my friend who took his steering wheel off to check something and couldn't get it back on all the way after, with the same sized gap. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? By the way, I made sure the straight line that goes across the circle lined up, so that's not it.
Well they have splines on them, you might need to turn it ever so slightly to get it to go on right. I've taken mine on and off before and never had a problem.
Sounds almost like the problem I had when initially getting my 92-95 SiR steering wheel put on. Are you still using the same style of steering wheel as the one you have? There should be a little plastic "spacer" that goes between the wheel itself and the column, itll be heavily greased. Did you get that same piece from the vehicle you got donor parts from? It might be possible that youve put it on w/ the wrong way facing the contact of the wheel, or that there is a different spacer used between 88-89, and 90-91, I highly doubt it, but its possible....
I'm putting on a 4-spoke wheel from a 90 civic sedan, but that's not the problem because the gap is the same when I try to put my old wheel on (91 hatchback). I think the greased plastic spacer that you're talkin about is the same thing as the circle I'm talkin about that doesn't seem to go all the way back in. It's definitely facing the right way and I tried turning it at all different angles, but it the control arms still push in about a quarter inch further. Yeah, so I realized that the gap is closer to a quarter inch. It doesn't seem like anyone else has had the same problem, but if you have let me know...
Damn! The horn doesn't work either, even though I put the wheel on the same way it came off. Has anyone had a problem like that with the horn?

...doesn't the shaft have ears past the splines that need to line-up with cut-outs on the circular mounting boss? I have a momo hub from a CRX and it has those cut-outs on the bottom.

not to jack the thread, but gray89si, which car did you put the 92-95 SiR steering wheel into? i have that steering wheel in my 90 crx si, and i have a gap and the horn doesnt work, but i still bolted it in and it works fine. just wondering if you had better results than me...is the horn contact supposed to match up?
thanks

If you're talkin about what I think you are, then yes and I did make sure they were lined up. And I got the horn to work, it was just a blown fuse. I guess I can live with the extra gap behind the steering wheel, but I'd still like some help if anyone has the same problem.
