Default How much lbs. of torque impact wrench do i need to work on my accord...

Any experience with impact wrenches?... i want to get one to work on my accord... i've been only using my buddies and was wondering what is a good minimum amount of lbs. of torque is recommended.

For example, be able to tackle jobs like changing rotors...

BTW, are the electric ones as good as the air ones cause they're cheaper.

the crankshaft pulley bolt and the axle nuts are the most torqued on the car: around ~180 ft-lbs.

correct, add in another 50 lbs do to wear and the elements

also you want a impact that can maintain pressure

Well, the electric ones say they give 230 lbs. of torque... wouldn't that be enough? I'm looking at electric ones cause i don't really have the cash to buy an air compressor, the hose, and the impact wrench altogether.

Seems i can get an electric one for about $40...?

with tools, probably more than anything else, you will get what you pay for.

some of the electric ones are pretty good I hear, but you have to spend some money to get something like snap-on or other high quality brand

so sence you dont know what quality is then i wont tell you about the almost new snapon 1/2 in gun i am selling for 200 firm ... maybe i would even throw in a hose if someone really really needed it ... but you buy a 40.00 piece of **** then all you have is a piece of **** nothing more nothing less....

and a 25 piece tool set doesent cost 850 you can get a socket set for about 120-150 and a ratchet for 45-60 .. you defentely get what you pay for ... i wouldnt give up my sockets for anything....

Snap-On tools are great but they certainly are marked up quite a bit. They're high-quality made, last longer, easier to use, more torque and less frustration, but really pricey. It's understandable since they're marketed as professional and high-end tools for the mechanics. But I wouldn't be surprised if the company makes a big profit for each tool a customer buys from them.

Oh and don't forget that those air compressors are pretty freakin' loud. If you have one in your garage, make sure you use them when no one's around or get good sound insulation. It's really distracting, if you ask me. But if you're getting a compressor to run a shop, then of course sound doesn't matter as much.

I feel your pain. I own a lot of tools, not all of them the best quality either I bought them a piece at a time, as i needed them. But I know I have spent $3000 easy on tools in the past few years. Some of that money was spent replacing junk tools i bought earlier when I didn't know the difference, and later broke.

Craftsman - good quality, not the best, but pretty good. Lifetime warranty. Break one, and you just go to sears and get a replacement free. Not too expensive either. Join the Craftsman club for free on their website and you get an additional 10% off everything during sales.

I'll guarantee that a $40 electric impact doesn't put out the torque it claims to. Will it take the lugs off your car quick? yup. Will it undo most of the bolts on your car? sure thing. Will it get the really badly stuck and rusted in place ones? The ones you really need an impact for. doubtful.

If you only have $40 to spend, go buy a 3/4in drive breaker bar, a can of PB Blaster, and a 5ft long piece of steel pipe. You'll end up buying them anyway, after you get pissed off at your $40 electric impact that won't bust loose that one rusted suspension bolt.

yeah, I have a Ingrsall Rand Air Impact. IT claims to put out 650lbs of torque in reverse but it won't break loose the crank bolt for anything. Not even my friends Snap On could. We finially used a 5 foot breaker bar and that special tool honda has for those things. It doesn't matter what it says it puts out. If your gonna buy an Impact get one thats higher priced. Ingrsall Rand are good impacts for the money as well as Snap On. But you do get what u pay for. I've used a DeWalt electric impact and it had problems taking off lug nuts. I wouldn't count on it breaking to many bolts on ur car.
