is it good for engine to take occasional long freeway trips?
my dad says that its good for car engines to run it on freeway/highway type trips once in a while. (eg. road trip or something). is this true? also, its not detremental (sp?) to just drive the car around in the city is it? cause thats all i do.
umm... lol all I have to say..
I heard another old father story tooo from someone..
"If you get motor mount inserts, they will mis align the engine"
baahahah
I never heard of crap like this, sorry.

My dad says the same thing... lol
"Okie dokie" I say to myself as I get onto the highway doing 130. jk
Good question though, I've always wondered if it really does help...

about every two to three months i take a trip from phoenix to LA. thats about 600 miles round trip. its not really good on my wallet
I don't know how long the trip should be, but engines that get time to warm up to optimum operating temperature are prone to last longer b/c buildup, etc. that doesn't burn out in city driving is combusted in highway driving.

well, from my understanding, our motors were designed to run at operating temperatures. when they do, they are very effecient and much less wear than when you drive on a cold motor. its better for the motor to take long trips than it is to take lots of short trips where the motor never fully warms up. thats why try to make the motor warm up faster, to cause less damage. just driving the car puts wear on the motor, but i would say that road trips are no worse on the motor than city driving.
how about body-wise??
do those dead flys and bees come out easily??
i just put wax on too... would that be detremental?

the longer you wait to clean them off the worse it will be, so wash them off as soon as possible. but you could always get a bra on the front of your car to protect it.

It'll protect against rocks, too

Highway miles are better than city miles on a car. On the highway, you can cruise at a constant speed, at a reasonable rpm, and the oil is circulating and heating well to protect the engine. When you drive in the city, the stop and go repetitiveness of the car causes more wear on the engine and the brakes. If you take trips less than 4 miles, the oil doesn't have time to warm up completely, and the protection isn't as good as it's supposed to be. My dad drove from CA to NJ when we moved there, 3,200 miles in a 88 Toyota Tercel. My dad used the same car to drive 67 miles EVERYDAY to work one way, that's over 120 miles per day, and the car had 375,000 miles on the original engine before it died, no rebuild either.

i go from cali to minnesota and viseversa every other month due to work. company pays for the gas and i think my car improved a bit and my driving improved too trying to get the best gas mileage.
Short drives wear down the engine. New Yorker's should know as Stop and Go traffic is inevitable here.
Longer drives are usually better for the car and for fuel economy. however, i am not sure if this implies that we should take the occassional road trip for the sake of car maintenance. That might be an old wives tale... or whatever
