Default New CRX!

Sup everybody. I just purchased my first CRX. Its a red 90 Si with 106k. I've only had it for a day and its already my baby. Anyway, I was looking at doing some simple performance mods to get the most out of the stock motor without going too overboard (no nitrous and turbo.... yet). I know I need an intake, but what is the best exhaust to get? A good cat-back? just a muffler? full exhaust? Anyway, I want to get the best performance for the money. Also, how do I go about getting VTEC. I know I must sound like I dont know anything (because I really dont), but I would really like to learn. Thanks in advance for any posts.

to get v-tec u can get a b16 engine or a d16z6
the b16 is dohc and the d16 is sohc, if u want to do some simple bolt ons get a full exhaust and CAI it will give it a good sound and some extra HP

ROFL - getting VTEC - like a bolt on? do they make bolt on VTEC?. Where can i get my VTEC refilled, i think i'm running out of VTEC. haha. just playin, much love for the new CRX'r. You'll be laughing at newbs in no time atall!

hmm. I think going nitrous and turbo would be easier for ya.

The B16 engine is the easiest motor to throw into your rex with VTEC. Involves some rewiring and a different ECU so be prepared to become a honda genius or shell out the dough for someone else to do it. I suggest the genius part.

Checkout the manuals on my sig, print and read.
There's a ton of good information on these boards about doing swaps and all the links you need to find How-To articles. this board is where i learned everything. Keep reading before you do anything major, buy a chrome intake from Ebay (20-35$) theyre the same as the rest they just aren't 50 State legal. That will give you a nice new sound and only takes a screw driver. Now go clean your engine, inspect all the parts and understand what they are and how they work.

Thanks for replies. Anyway, I thought the D16 could be rebuilt with new stuff and get VTEC. Yeah, I know, I'm stupid. But if it cant what is the B18 LS/VTEC conversion thingy? My buddy has a 00 integra LS and is always talking about how he's gonna do that. Sorry for my ignorance on hondas. Still trying to learn.

your buddy is referring to bolting on a completely different cylinder head, that contains the vtec system. a lot of work is involved to do it properly. my only advice: dont waste money on an aftermarket header. instead put that money into the forced induction fund i would however recommend a full cat-back system.

Congrats on gettin a CRX, at least you got the vtec right instead of calling it vtech like some newbies! you will love your CRX and be rewarded by its performance if you take care of it and love it as you should.

A b16a would be a good place to start..Steve from HMO has a few cable driven B16s with lsds in stock..he may cut you a deal. Or you can find a d16y8 anywhere for about 500-700 dollars...or you could even go the ZC route..but it wont have Vtec.

You can get any of these exhausts if you have the money, apexI Greddy, 5Zigen.... or you can go out and buy a high flo cat, resonator, and exhaust muff from a Honda Tune shop, then take all of that to a muffler shop and have them put on 2 1/4" piping with all of the parts you bought.

A b16 with the lsd and some body lightening, with a 70 shot should suit your needs! Rock on..and tell Strongbad whazzup for me.

Congrats on your new purchase (A good one I might add ) you will have a lot of fun with the car and learn a lot on this board *BUT* the one thing you should do since you are new is read the rules here https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=359086 and use this https://honda-tech.com/zerosearch to answer most if not all of your questions.

Thanks for posts. Anyway, after reading some stuff Ive gathered that the stock Si motor for my car isn't gonna cut it. Is this true? To get any decent amount of performance do I need to do a swap? I bought this car because it was in GREAT condition, engine and everything so I could actually get another 100k+ out of the current engine. I will be using it as a daily driver, but want to have some fun at the track also (MY first car purchase w/o help from parents). Is it necessary to get a B16 or ZC? How much potential does the D16 have? Just wanted to get my stuff straight before I start buying stuff. Thanks.

Let's put it this way, if your going to use it as a daily driver, then the motor will let you have fun. you should get it boosted though. Going with the B16 is a great idea but for your purpose, the motor thats in there is fine.

Bleh.

A b16 WILL cost more and be more complicated but if you do all the necessary research and do it all yourself you will have THAT MUCH MORE knowledge inside your head for whatever projects may arise in the future.

People can talk about how great their ZC is but it doesn't have the overall potential of a DOHC vtec motor.....that's all speaking in NA terms.

If you consider Boost, remeber that turbcharging a CRX is about as complicated as doing a b-series swap and close to the cost (if done well). Also, Forced induction requires more attention on a more regular basis than NA.

And just as a rebutal, my MOM DOESN'T have a B16, thank you very much!
