How do you avoid LOSSING compression in your cylinders?
With the recent post of someone having the compression of a lawn mower it started me thinking and formulating questions. First off what are the main reasons why you would loose compression and Second what can be done to avoid this?
Worn rings, valve seating, headgasket.
To prevent it. Only one I can think of is not to drive the car. Or rebuilds every 10-15K.

It will happen slowly over time.
Properly maintaining your vehicle is the best preventative measure you can take.

Oil changes....oil oil oil...and dont' cheap out on oil...use either Mobil 1 Synthetic, redline, or Amsoil if you are serious about your car. I know there are more oils you can use, but these are the three main players.
Honda engines actually gain compression over time due to carbon buildup. As a result, you'll see these cars dyno slightly higher than when they were new...weird eh?

Change the oil regularly, but it doesn't have to be synthetic. Also, you'll want to keep up with other normal maintenance as well.
If you are tracking the car, I like to change the oil before every track day. I averaged a track day every other month when I had my R. I would simply have the oil changed a few days before the event. We do the same with George's ITR, and his motor has NEVER seen Mobil One, or any other synthetic. The last compression test turned out great with 70k on the motor.
I use/used Castrol GTX 5w30.

ill tell ya what throws off compression tests, valve adjustments. I was way overdue and did a compression test and was only hitting 280-285 psi in all cylinders. Sounds great right? Nope I hit 300+psi in all cylinders on my last test. Had the valves adjusted and compression shot up 20-25 psi in all cylinders.
BTW I had CTR pistons, thats why the compression numbers are up there.
