Aftermarket flywheel: Who has one?
Hey guys, I'm looking into purchasing a Fidanza flywheel but I've heard too many mixed reviews about the pros and cons of a light flywheels. I've done lots of searching and researching but I still can't come to a conclusion.
I know that the engine will rev much quicker and that it's awesome for the track, but it also sucks really bad on the drag and during stop and go traffic.
One of my concerns is that the Fidanza is something like 7-8lbs (depending who you ask and where you read it from), this sounds really light. This is my daily driver/weekend warrior so I am looking for a compromise between the two.
Please post your experiences and your clutch/flywheel combo so I can base my decision on what to get or not get when it's time to do my clutch in about two months time.
Thanx

I run a Clutchmaster Stage 3 Clutch and Clutchmaster Flywheel. I love the setup. It is my second time running this setup (old motor was stolen)
4-bangin or blazinb16 do you guys have problems with stop and go traffic, like does it stall really easily? How about on the drag strip, I heard that launching really sucks with such a lightweight flywheel, any truth to that?

i think you just have to learn how to launch with it, im sure all the pro racers have em and they arn't complaining. id say the benifits outweigh the negatives.

What you also have to take into consideration is that an aftermarket pressure plate will be heavier than your stock one. So if you put a stronger clutch with the stock flywheel you are adding rotational mass to your drivetrain. The lightened flywheel will help to compensate for the bigger pressure plate as well as let you rev quicker. By the way I have the Exedy 8.5 fly with the Exedy organic race disk and I love it. It has great grab and I only stall out in traffic once in a while!
I have the Excedy 9lb flywheel and their stage one clutch... I am not a fan of the clutch as it is a bit noisy...perhaps i didnt break it in correctly, but it chatters a bit...or atleast thats what i think that noise is!
On B-series:
ITR shaved/blnc(12lbs) + ITR clutch ==
/5
-excellent piece, reved nicely no problems at all
Toda + 3 puck mugen clutch ==
/5
-way too hardcore for stop and go traffic as well as rainy or snowy weather
Cusco + ITR clutch ==
/5
-excellent all around nice engament and lasts a while
JUM flywheel + JUN clutch (organic) ==
/5
-flywheel is just like the Toda/Cusco pieces, but the clutch really sucks, smells funny at all times
on D-series:
SRR + Exedy organic disc/race pressure plate ==
/5
- nice all around, 11lbs made it rev quicker and held the momentun very well.
from the different setups I had, the slightly heavier pieces 11-12lbs seemed to offer more torque/stored energy between gear shifts and felt quicker

Good post
Too light of a flywheel will effect 60' times because it wont be able to store as much energy... ive had 2 friends run consistently slower 60' times ~.2-.3 sec by switching to 10lb flywheels.
anyone else have this problem? This was in NA cars

i have a jun cromoly flywheel in my D16
i had a fidanza in it before....
both had no problems....
yes in stop and go its kind of different, but like someone said above the pro's out weigh the cons by alot in my eyes...

if you already have a bumpy/rough idle (ie: cams), the flywheel can take some getting used to, b/c what goes up , must come down. you'll rev very quickly in a b16, but the revs will fall pretty quick too. i only stall out if i come into a stop sign or red light and push in the clutch from about 3500-400 rpms. the rpm's fall so fast, it'll stall sometimes. i go thru the gears anyways (excuse to practice heel/toe/rev-matching, and that helps a lot, as you gradually get down to your idle, instead of just pushing in the clutch and hitting the brakes.
setup: act prolite 8.8lb flywheel (forged
), and clutchmasters stage 4 clutch disk. (b16)

you'd better get your clutch pedal adjusted. it's not supposed to be like that.. if you continue, it will die.
i have exedy clutch and fly. it's a nice combo if done correctly

94 GSR swap
just installed an ACT 8.8 pound racelite chorme-moly flywheel.
revs do NOT drop off and make the car die.
revs much faster and the car feels quicker.
nice mod, great price.

I got the ACT HDSS clutch with billet flywheel 11.9 lbs great for daily driver including stop and go traffic. revs nicely without losing the "stored energy" of the stock flywheel.
