Compression test - 96 JDM type-r engine in a 93 Civic coupe
black smoke from 96 type-r 05-29-2003 09:43
I have a 96 type-r engine with straight pipe...
I Burn a lot of oil (black smoke from back when I boot it)...
my cylinder compression test was ( 15 000 Km ago )
cylinder 1 was 210-15psi
cylinder 2 was 210-15psi
cylinder 3 was a bit low.. 205psi
cylinder 4 was 210-15
I add a liter of oil every 500-600KM...
is my engine in good shape? is my compression healthy for a 96 JDM ITR engine?
thanks

I use Castrol Syntec 5-50... and yes I drive hard and a lot of Vtec.
should I change oil? A lot of people in my area use that oil...

5-50??? Why such a high number? The highest I would go is 40...and I'd only run that in the summer time.
Do you know what those two numbers stand for? The larger the gap between the two numbers, the more additives that need to be added, which means the less "real" oil you get...which means it will break down a lot faster.
And Castrol Syntec is garbage...it's not even a synthetic oil, Castrol just markets it under that. So basically, you're paying synthetic prices for a non synthetic oil.
Get Mobil 1 Supersyn, it's the best oil you can find at your auto store and it's made by the same people who make Amsoil.

10w30 in the summer...10w40 if you push your car really hard...it'll give you a bit of extra protection on those hot days.
5w-30 in the winter, or even 0w since you are from Canada. 10w is too thick for startup in negative 0 temps.
Also, make sure your oil filter has a pressure release valve so the oil flows during startup better...Fram doesn't have these. Honda filters do.

10w30 in the summer ?
do u know how high the oil temperature reaches? Whats the average summer temperature there?
Here in portugal i use castrol rs 0w40 for the winter and castrol TWS 10w60 for the summer.

Just because you use it doesn't mean it's right. 10w60 is way too heavy, I don't care if your temps get to 110 every day.
10w40 is as high as I would go...that's pretty thick.
0w40...that's a large range, maybe you didn't read what I posted before. You want to keep that range reasonable...anything over 30 difference is too high.
10w30 is a perfect weight for summer. Change the oil every 3,000 miles, 2500 if you drive it really hard, and you'll be perfectly fine.
Using w60 is extreme overkill.

compression looks good. its probably the oil rings. thats leaking. 10-50 is too thick. putting 10-50 should make the oil burning slow down b/c its thinker and wont leak through.
