Default Mandrel vs Crush Exhaust Piping

What's the difference between these two pipings? I mean, when they actually make the piping. I just went to the muffler shop and saw the mechanic putting pipes into a machine, and it bent the pipes for him... which kind of piping was this? Thanks.

that is considered crush bending.....i mean, it doesnt have the wrinkles that crush bends usually give, but it does make the bent angle ID a bit smaller than the rest of the piping......it basically PINCHES the piping, makes the angle, but there is small flow restriction

mandrel bending is when the piping is heated and bent so that there no ID loss....which basically allows more flow through the pipe

ID=inner diameter (of the piping)

Think of "crush bending" like this: Take a garden hose (with the water running) and bend it. You'll notice that the water flow is slowed (or stopped if it's crimped all the way). This is the same priciple behind crush bending.

Anybody with Crush bent 2.5" piping....could you feel a diff in power when adding this piping compared to the original stock pipe?

Now that is a good ****** question... and a waste of money if there is no damn difference...

in the end it all depends on what the exhaust is going through because the biggest restriction is the resonator and the exit can.

I was searching on this and I wanted to bring it back since it never really was finished.

Is crush bending really that much more restrictive? Rather, is paying another 200-300 for mandrel bent piping really worth a small gain over crush bending?

If you're setting up your car for the utmost power----cams, ported head, custom header, bigger valves, tuned, etc.----then mandrel is the way to go. But for your everyday street setup with just an intake and header, crushed piping is probably fine for 99% of the people. On my old Accord, I was running 2.5" crushed piping with a Borla muffler and could still feel a slight difference over stock (mostly in the upper RPMs). I think it was worth it since I only paid like $275 out the door for everything. You can get mandrel-bent piping from online stores (jcwhitney.com to name one) for pretty cheap, though. Buy a few bends, and have a shop weld everything up for you.
