Car starts without clutch
I bought this 88hf from this guy and I can start the car without stepping on the clutch pedal. I HATE THAT. How do I make it so I have to use the clutch pedal to start the car.
none of the 88's had this I believe. Mine doesnt have it, i'd probably like it better if it did have it though, just incase i start it in gear by accident. but i pretty much always press the clutch while starting anyways.
it probably isnt that hard to wire one up though, but I wouldnt want to have to go through the trouble if it is gonna be complicated, not that big of a deal really.

Just press the clutch in each time you start the car. I don't understand why this would be a problem. It's a small detail that should not concern you.
If you work on your car, this would be one less wire that can go bad. That's a good thing I think. I say, Don't worry about it.

1)just pretend that you have to step on the clutch and youll get used to it.
or
2)you can try to pull out the clutch switch assembly from an 88-91 . You will probably need the bracket too to hold the clutch switch. it is a cylinder with two wires. also you will have to figure out how to wire it.
Id go with 1)
EDIT: my bad i meant 89-91

Why an 88, I think he has an 88

Yeah I have an 88hf. I don't think it came that way from Honda. It's not really a problem, it's just I got use to stepping on the pedal. And if I do it when I don't have to I just feel like an idiot. But it's not a problem. Just something that annoy's me. If I could undue it that would be great. thanx

Dont worry about it i have same sh** on my 1988 CRX HF. I got used to it but sometimes i forget and start on gear(almost hit somebody couple months ago it was person not a car). I dont worry about it that much you know why cuz we guys with 88 crx hf have what others dont have 1850 lbs of metal. I think my CRX weights maybe about 1780 lbs cuz all the holes it has. Some day i go to weigh station and make sure.
Rust=good weight reduction
What you should is get that switch that goes on the cluch pedal and wire it. If you want that switch i can get one for you for free if you pay the shipping.

FYI the 88 crx's didn't have a clutch saftey. None of them did. I myself like the fact that there isn't one. You can do the reverse gear trick for taking out harmonic bolts

Yes it will still start without the clutch after the swap.

a question came to mind.... since some people say it did come w/ it and some say it didnt... i dont know... my 88 engine was blown and had oil every which way (stupid girl who owned it never changed the oil and blew the head gasket and kept driving till engine froze...) bought my friends whole 91 si longblock for 180 and installed that.
but anyways... what if that guy had the auto start ... so he can warm his engine up for 10 mins. before jumping into the car... I want to get one... usually they bypass the clutch saftey... btw... whats the minuses of auto start???? i dont like jumping into my car and then waiting 10 mins to warm up... but if its really bad for the car... then nm.

How about if you leave it in gear and remote start it, the car rolls somewhere and BYE BYE no more car, maybe even property damage. I would have that for an automatic

I know how to, sell your 88 and buy an 89...

On the 89-91's there is a switch mounted up near the top of the clutch pedal. This is the clutch safety switch. When the clutch is pressed, it completes the ground to the main relay or starter solenoid relay (I forget which). You could get the parts from the junk yard and do it yourself.
BTW: On 89-91's, splicing a switch into the wire going to the clutch safety switch makes for a decent kill switch. Starter won't go without flipping the switch.

I am very surprised at the lack of knowledge on this board
But then maybe others, like me, just weren't reading this topic
The clutch safety switch is there, as mentioned, for safety purposes... no, the '88s didn't come with one. It has to be added later if you want it. The reason you want it is for use on a racetrack. They won't let you through tech at the dragstrip if you can start the car with the clutch pedal up - for whatever reason!
I had to add one myself, and it's entirely possible, and not even that difficult. If you want to do it right (and I highly recommend this) go to a junkyard and pick up an '89-'91 pedal assembly. It's vastly different from an '88 pedal assembly and contains a dedicated mounting point for the switch. Or you can do what I did (not recommended) and ghetto fab a bracket that bolts to the firewall and holds the switch for you. The downside of doing it my way - while it's cheaper and takes less time to do - is that it means the switch isn't positioned right, so as in my case, the switch goes CREEEEEEAK every time you let the clutch out
I'm switching to the correct pedal assembly soon!
Wiring it up takes more time... you'll need to also pick up the switch, the relay, and the wiring harness for the switch from the junkyard. On your '88 you'll notice on the back of the fusebox there's a blue wire (with white stripe) loop. That's the wire for the relay. You'll need to cut that wire and add in both the relay and the switch. Just look at how it's connected in the junked car and it should be pretty obvious
It only took me a few hours to wire it in, so don't sweat it too much!
