Default Quick question on valve specs

i pulled these specs out of my service manual for my 98 hx d16y5

Valve clearance (cold):

STANDARD, (NEW)

IN: 0.18 - 0.22, (0.007 - 0.009)

EX: 0.23 - 0.27, (0.009 - 0.011)

my quesiont is, are the "STANDARD" specs the SAE measurment and the "New" specs the MM or vise versa?

he is right, get the feeler gagues for the second set of numbers, and im told you should go for the lower end of the spectrum.

The spec is in mm. The spec in the ( ) is in inches.

ok one last question..well i hope

you're supposed to start on cylinder 1 and follow firing order.
i know you manually turn the crank so that each cylinder will be at the top when u work on that cylinder. but how do i know that cylinder 1 will be at top when i hand turn the crank?

is there a marking somewhere that will let me know that cylinder 1 will be at the top?

thnx

I adjust all valves on the heel of the cam, the part of the cam opposite the highest point of the lobe. You want the high lift part facing up, away from the rocker arms. You can tell when # 1 or #4 are at TDC on the compression stroke, because the white mark on the crank will be lined up with the pointer on the lower timing cover. Whichever cylinder (#1 or #4) that does not have any valves open, is the one that is at TDC on the compression stroke. #1 & #4, and #2 & #3 are piston pairs. When #1 is at the top, #4 is at the top, and when #2 is at the top, #3 is at the top.
But you really don't have to worry about all that stuff, just make sure to adjust the valves when the cam is not compressing the valves (on the heel).
BTW, I am too lazy to turn the engine over by hand, I just use a remote starter to bump the engine over.HTH.

ok got it...

so is it feasible to adjust #1 and #4 first and then do #2 and #3 since both pairs are at TDC? or do i really have to go thru one at a time 1-3-2-4 ?

The pistons are at TDC, but the valves are at different positions. When #1 piston is at TDC on compression, with all valves closed, # 4 piston is at TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke, getting ready to start down on the intake stroke, and all valves are open (overlap).

Default ok adjusted them... but got a new set of ???

ok i just got finished adjusting the valves...not that difficult to do as a matter of fact.
my only concern is that it seems i hear more/little louder tapping coming from under the valve cover.
im thinking that when i was using the feeler guage theres supposed to be a "slight drag" on the gauge, which i did. But i think i left it a little too loose? maybe i should adjust the lock nut and pin a little tighter so there is more of a drag on the gauge?

also i noticed that the rocker arm that i was working on has a little play when i was adjusting them. meaning that i can move the arm up and down slightly by pulling or pushing the arm. don't know if this play a part in the tapping.

tomorrow im gonna adjust them again but so that there is more drag and that the arm doen'st move up or down

Should not hear excessive tapping, no. Feeler guage should have a slight drag, but not so tight that you have to pull really hard to get it out.
