Default Downshifted to 3rd...

Went to 3rd from 5th at 70mph on a Prelude the other night, too rough on the car cause I have friends that do it all the time in their cars? What is the max speed in 3rd anyway, I think I was around 90-100.

I have an ITR, not a Prelude.

Just try to rev match before you slam the car. I accidentally went from 5th to 3rd @ about 75mph... it wasn't pretty. (Also, dropping to 3rd at 75mph doesn't leave many ticks on the rpm gauge and it flew by too quickly to do anything.)

It should be OK. Third on a GSR goes till at least 90mph, and I think the Prelude should have taller gearing so it should be even higher. Just remember to rev match whenever downshifting to keep wear down to a minimal. Although I usually never jump 2 gears when downshifting. But if I do, I usually double clutch to keep the synchros from having to work too hard.

When I said "on a Prelude" I meant that I raced a Prelude, sorry.

I've found on the ITR anything below 80 is OK for 3rd, yes it's pushing it and yes you have to rev match and yes it hits redline pretty fast, but it puts you above 6K when you shift to 4th and you know what that does. Think about it, if you had accelerated from a stand still you wouldn't shift from 3rd until redline right? Down shifting at around 75 will put you in that sweet spot, just don't try it at any speed over 80.

Third is about 98 or so.depending on tire size. Are you saying 75 mph is too high to be downshifting into 3rd?I downshift into 3rd at 90 if I am going to race at that speed.Just double clutch if you are worried about it not being smooth.

Revmatching when you're doing 70-80 and you want to take off fast??? Seems like you would lose too much momentum.

I just did the 5th to 3rd shift today. I love that shift! I don't know how fast I was going, but the tach hit 7k and I wounded it out to 8400 or so before slaming it into 4th for a few seconds... Love it...

5-3 shift is pretty common I guess. since if we need immediate acceleration on highways, but flooring on 4th doesn't really goes that fast. I know this scenrio all too well: You are cruising at legal speed, which is less than 80 in most states, then some jerk beams you from the back / tailgate / swift-cut you, so instinctly you down 3rd, the car jumps, accelerates abit and back up to 4th for instant VTEC range. I have to do this at least 3 times a week on stupid ricers.
