More progress on my CRX build. Done painting. 56k please come back another day
Well I finally got the thing painted minus the doors, inside of hatch, gas lid, and rear bumper. They'll get done next week.
Tell me what you think.
BTW I'll never paint another car in my life.

Check out the material in the air after spraying the clear. This stuff should help your breathing
It was pretty hard on the eyes though.
More pics on my site.

Thanks mang.
I'll be dropping in my b16 in a couple days. I just finished redoing the harness so it looks factory.

That's all overspray from the clear. When I was spaying the color there was hardly any haze in the air and both times I was using an HVLP gun.
Finished product will be post around the end of the month.

nice job!
thanks everybody.
Ya I did all the body work myself and I have a big write up about it on my site but I didn't really talk about the painting process in detail.
I used PPG deltron 2000 basecoat and PPG omi au clear. The gun I used for applying the color and clear was an HVLP gravity feed gun set to about 50psi at the compressor. I found the HVLP system pretty easy but I've never used anything else. I basically just looked around on the internet for tips and how-to articles then adjusted the spray pattern and air pressure till the paint went on really smooth.
When it came to spraying the clear it was a bit different; more difficult. If you move to fast with the gun you get orange peel(which looks bumpy) and if you go to slow you get runs. This window is pretty narrow but this was also my first time and since I actually had to clear the car twice, second time around I was pretty use to it.
The biggest problem I ran into was after I had my first two coats of clear on and after I wet sanded, a light fixture that was on the ceiling of the garage the car was in(I did all the work at a friends garage) fell on the roof of my car
After I fixed the dent I spayed a PPG sealer to seal the bodywork. When I went to apply color over the top of the sealer the paint bubbled and lifted around the edge of the sealer. This also happened when I tried switching to a high build PPG primer instead of the sealer. This lifting happened in a few other spots to and the only thing I can come up with after talking to various professionals is that I didn't properly back sand and gases that were trapped reacted with the solvents in the color. So basically that light ended up costing me about $300CDN. So I sprayed the entire car with sealer and then re-applied color and clear.
The most important thing in a paint job is the preparation. Any imperfections in bodywork will show up.
So the basic steps to a paint job are do your bodywork then use a high build, two part sandable primer. Then block sand the panels till they are perfect. Then clean obsessivly using a pre-cleaner or lacquer thinner in really dirty places. You should also use these cleaners before you spray the primer. Then you can mix and apply the color coats waiting about 10 mins in between coats for the gases to be released. Then after I spayed 3 coats of color I wet sanded and applied another final coat of color. Then 30 mins after the last coat of color was sprayed I mixed and spayed the 2 coats of clear. After the car is re assembled I'll wetsand and buff the clear to get the surface perfectly flat. Certain things will vary depending on the brand of paint you use.
The materials will usually cost around $600 CDN.
Next time I want my car painted though I'll get someone else to do it. There are a lot of potential problems you can run into and someone that has experience will be able to do better bodywork faster then someone who doesn't do it for a living.
How was that for a write up?
I'll be adding more information to my site aswell as I go along.
