Default D16Y7 clutch problem

Hi guys!

I would appreciate any help I can get.

I have Civic coupe '96 with stock D16Y7 engine. I am reaching 65000 miles soon so I decided to change the clutch. It is the hydraulic clutch system (of course you knew that but I thought I should mention).

I bought Sachs (complete set) and exchanged it. Everything is fine, it works well BUT there is some annoying squeeling noise from 900-3000 rpm.

First I thought that was one of the belts but when I listened more carefuly I discovered that the noise is coming from that cylinder that is attached to the tranny (I think it is called slave cylinder: the one that has a rubber cover - it is placed right underneath the distribution cap).

Now, when I press the clutch pedal just a little (aprox 1-2 inches) the squeeling goes away. The same thing happens when I squeeze gently that rubber cap on the slave cylinder (the push of the finger does the job).

The noise is very similar to belt-noise but there is more METAL-TO-METAL sound in it.

I will try to describe what I did when I was replacing the clutch because I think this may be the problem.

When I was attaching the fork (that's what we call it) that has the release bearing on it I saw a little metal spring so to call, more like a wire and it fell off the fork. I noticed that this "wire" holds the fork tightened to the tranny so I fixed it like this (and maybe that is the problem): there is little hole in the fork and I pushed this wire through it so it comes out on the fork at the engine side; then I found the mounts for this spring (wire) on other side of the fork and I "forced" the spring inside. It all went like tick-tack. Then I pushed the fork firmly to the tranny. This also went like tick-tack. Then I mounted the cylinder back.

It all went great, no problems but now I am not sure of I mounted the spring like it should be mounted cos I wasn't able to see the correct position cos it fell off...

So if someone had similar problem or knows how to deal with this squeeling noise, I would be very grateful for the help...

Thanks in advance

What is a throwout bearing.

In the Sachs set I got 3 things; pressure plate, clutch disk and the release bearing (I think it is called like that) that goes on the fork and presses the pressure plate onto the clutch disk.

That is all I got in the set.

Can you please describe me the throwout bearing so I know what to look for.

And one more question: will I have to take off the the whole tranny to change that throwout bearing?

OK, since this throwout bearing is called differently in my country, I got confused.

Yes, I bought the whole thing including the throwout bearing and exchanged it.

Just few minutes ago I got an idea. I will try to apply some grease onto the rod the pushes the fork, maybe it will go away (since only a push of the finger on the rubber cap solves the problem). Maybe there some dust or whatever that is causing this noise.

Thanks again!

what u call a release bearing is the throwout bearing, so u replaced it already. is the sach's disk an oem replacement or a high perfprmance unit? if it's a high performance unit it could be just the material that's used on the disk making noise, kinda like a brake pad.

Did you lube up the shaft that the throwout bearing(release bearing) slides on? I used high temp synthetic lube .

Yes, I lubed the shaft with the high-resistance water-proof lube that came with my clutch set. I lubed the shaft and I lubed the throwout bearing a little from the inner side so I guess that's not the problem.

I opened the rubber cap when the car was turned on and I saw that the fork is slightly moving. You can hardly see it, but it is moving more like slightly shaking. Maybe this is causing the noise because I know it must NOT move.

I will try to vent the whole clutch system and maybe change the oil cos in my opinion, the bearing is to close to the pressure plate when the clutch is not pressed. I think that causes the shaking and therefore squeeling...

Any suggestions??? Please write so I can have bigger choice of probable solutions.

Thanks!
