looks like you're new to honda tech. first off, welcome. you'll find posting open ended questions like that will yield MANY opinions, which may only confuse you. keep in mind that the search function on this site is your friend.
personally, i would recommend getting the B16A since they are so cheap compared to the B18C and slapping a turbo or supercharger on it.

That's a good call! But damn if the thought of another B18 rex doesn't make me giddy.... but yeah, the cost flies up there pretty fast with one of those. Just get a B16A1 (an A2 if you wanna be different) and tweek it with CTR cams and pistons, get a longer tranny gear (if you want top end speed), bulk it up some then slap a big old turbo on there. that's about the cheapest way... but just look at some of the other guys' setups.. everything from H22 monsters to B17 oddballs..
haha.. it's all there. I'm new here too, but just reading about the things these guys have is awesome. Good luck!

alright man I dont want to try to force my opinion on anyone but I just want you to think about one thing. Try to learn about how a motor works before you learn how vtec works. LOL. Vtec can be very hard to understand especially if you dont understand the regular motor. Try starting with something like a B18a or a B18b and then later on if you want to learn about vtec then all you have to do is put a B16/B18c head on it. Just my opinion though. You can yeild about as much power (notice I said about) as a B16a with a LS. Maybe not horsepower but torque. I know that the LS is a great motor for any beginer and there is a good aftermarket for them as well.
LS is a good motor, more fun to drive around on the streets with... BUT, for top end, it just doesn't pull nearly as well as a B16. Do whichever one is cheaper, I bet you'd be happy with either.
Agreed acept if you get a freek LS...... I had one that kept up with a 89 B16a1 crx till he cut out at 120. we were dead even. I dont know what was up with that. Anyway. FREAK MOTORS KICK ***......

Why is it you always hear about 'freak LS motors' but not anything else? Other motors tend to be more eaual. Did Honda quality control just suck when they made LS motors?

Its Vtec.... Vtech is a phone..... Anyway, I got an h22/ shoved into a 1991 CRX Dx, and it was a bitch. Lots of money and time. Its fast though, and has loads of tq. (need slicks)
If I could do it over I would have gotten a built GSR and ran about 12 lbs of boost. The CRX is a good platform to drop a JDM engine in and be really fast...the hatchies too. Gotta love them...I love my CRX more than my 1999 D16y8! Civic EX.

I can't believe nobody asked him what the hell he wants to do with it?
Daily driven?
Street racing?
Track racing?
Drag racing?
NA:
LS built for drag, or even LSvtec (there's actually quite a bit of documentation on it nowadays)
Built b16 for track
B18c1 or C1 block with b16 head
B18c5?
Boost:
LS turbo, supercharged
B16 Turbo
etc, etc....
How much power are you looking to make? Are you trying to break some records? What kind of money do you have to spend?

That's a relative question.
Some people love making record breaking power, and some still like to pass emissions. Some people like to have fun doing HPDE's and others like to beat a Mustang from stoplight to stoplight.
I say B16 because hearing a motor at 9k+ rpm's is one of the greatest sounds in the world!
If I had it to do over again I would have done a b18c1 or an LSvtec.
