*56k'ers - Photo Warning* Body panel/body job experts advice needed
Hey guys,
I hope some people can help me out. I have a 1996 Civic HB that need some repair work. I know the basic minimum about body work and thought I would see how one would repair this damage. It has rusted right through and has released the clip for the rear bumper cover.
I am not looking for a repair manual or anything like that. I was just wondering about the basic steps on how to proceed.
Thanks alot guys...
Andrew

Best best would be to cut out the rust completly, then either bondo and shape a new fender or just weld a new piece. I wouldn't chance it, just buy new fenders. They aren't that expensive.
Thanks. Another question I have, is on my HB, that one piece isnt just the rear fender. That panel is actually the entire side of the car. I am sure that part can be purchased as well, but is it wise to tamper with removing that panel? Sorry for the rookie body questions....

damn, that is a hard spot to fix.. basically just like Slow-R said though.. except buying new fenders on that part of the car is still going to involve some cutting and welding regardless..
you got to go to a body shop to get that fixed, dont cut it off and make it all bondo. you need to get metal put back there
I had the same problem on my 5th gen. If they do a shitty job, its just gonna bubble back through a year later. I went the bondo route and now its doing just that. Definitely weld a new piece of metal on there. I don't know what a 6th gen rear panel looks like, but the 5th gen one is huge and expensive from what I'm told.
Goto a reputable body shop and have them cut it all off and weld some new metal on there. Its not gonna be cheap, but remember, you get what you pay for, and in bodywork, you don't wanna be cheap.

Excellent.. thanks alot guys. I was just trying to get some knowledge for when I do goto the shop I know what I am kind of talking about. There is no way I was going to do this myself
. At the shop would they cut out that piece, and replace it with an arbitrary piece of metal then shape that metal; or do they actually make pieces for this sort of surgery. Thanks again guys.

yeah dont **** around with bondo..... im no expert on bodywork but i can see that it is way to rusted to be slapping bondo down. bring it to a shop and get a new piece welded on.... its gonna be costly but well worth it in the end.
Does anyone have a very rough cost of what I would be lookng at to repair this damage? I know it is hard to make an estimate such things, but I thought maybe someone might be a body guy and might have an idea of what they would charge my rusted ***
Cheers

your looking at about a grand if you do it correctly. a friend of mines 94 hatch did that and he went to the junkyard and cut is own piece off. not the whole rear panel but enough to take out the rust area. he had his uncle do the work for him so he only spent money on the paint. good luck.
my 92 4 door has the same problem on both sides.... for now i just put a screw through the backside of the bumper and in to what's left of the metal next to where the clip is supposed to be.
Fender? In a HB that is actually the quarter panel, unless you are talking about cutting out the 'fender' part of the quarter panel and replacing that... Which is what I am going to proceed and do as of right now. I can't find a replacement quarter panel for $50.....
(evil hx coupe) you need to look at the picture more closely before posting about getting a new fender. if you look at it. its part of the rear quarter panel.
A piece of advice to EK HB owners if you live in an area where salt is applied in the winter remove the rubber piece from around the wheel well, unless you want to end up in the situation as this poor guy.
The piece of rubber is pointless and only promotes corossion so do yourselvs a favour and remove it!!

Damn I hate being referred to as "that poor guy"
It's all good, I got the ride for $2000 knowing it had that and needed a new tranny for the D16Y7. So, it is body and swappy time
.
Cheers for all the help guys..

you got cancer.....just go to the junkyard, find a suitable donor car and have that panel cut off.
then proceed to the body shop.

$600 ~ $800(Canadian) for both sides... you should get a 5 year warranty for that much..(or tell them you want a 5 year warranty.) If the bodyshop guys think they are good, they should give you that warranty (or at least 3 year).. and if they don't wanna give you the 3 or 5 year warranty, don't do it... go somewhere else..
and yes you can order the rear quarter panels from dealers but it's just too much...
good luck

Both sides of the car for $600 - $800? Score! I am only rusted on that one side. That is the only spec of rust on the damned thing
hehehe
Good to see some Tdot help in Canuck bucks.

About $500 - $600 is about right to get it done.
I paid 500 for both sides.
Cut out Rust and welded on new metal. Finished and blew in paint.
Wet saned and polished area...like new.

You'll have to cute it. Might wanna weld on flares while your at it so you can fit some decent wheels in there
I just had the rear quarter panels on my '94 hatch replaced with new sheet metal. Let me tell you, it was 10 times worse than yours on both sides and now it's perfect. I should take a few pics when I get the car back this afternoon. The job I got done was around $800 Cdn.
ull definetly need a new rear skin or rear quarter. bondo is a quick way out but not very good for the long term picture. it would involve window removal and busting out the welds on the top (under the nasty black strips we have on top of our roofs) the skins themselves arent too bad, its the labor. hope this helps. thanks
