Default Tuning a chipped ECU

Maybe I am out of the game or something, but what is the point of having your ecu chipped, and then having it tuned with a VAFC/e-manage/etc....I find it redundant, am I the only one?

I don't find it redundant since not all pre-programed ECU's are custom tailored for your engine.

Yes, but when doing a "chipped-ecu" you are changing the fuel maps & possibly timing, while you could do the same with a E-manage.

the vafc can fine tune fuel and crossover not sure on the emanage.

chipped ecus have entirely different ignition tables. vafc doesnt do anything in that department.

yup..... since i chip ecu's, i'm going w/ a vafc later this week and getting it tuned on saturday on a dyno. I'll let you know my numbers. So far, stock ecu: 160whp, custom all motor chipped p28 ecu: 167whp, on saturday, i will post the after tuning vafc: whp?

then that'll some what answer your question

kenji's P28 runs really rich to begin with (even with stock injectors), so a lot of motors need to tone down the fuel.

I'm guessing a lot of other rechipped P28's are like this too.

Also, a rechipped ECU keeps you from maxxing out the stock injectors so quickly.

But as far as tuning goes... I could get an e-manage, that can adjust injectors up to 150%, you can adjust the timing, adjust fuel in 100rpm increments, change the VTEC crossover point. They also show you your injector duty cycle, so you know how wide open your injectors acutally are.

So would their be a point in doing a chip if I can control all of this with an E-manage.

You won't need a chipped ECU with the E-manage (if you get the support tool, pressure sensor/harness and injector harness). The VAFC is the one that would even conceivably need it.

Thank you, that pretty much awnsers my question. So everyone who is spending around $250for chipped ecu + 300/350$ for a VAFC is wasting their money, when you can get a e manage for around $400 market price.

But you still need to buy the ignition harness, pressure sensor/harness, injector harness, and support tool before you can enable the extra functionality. That's closer to $600, not just $379 (MSRP). The E-manage base unit goes for around $299 market price.
