Default Horsepower Gain

I bought a 92 prelude just before winter and just got it out of storage about a month ago, and am just now ordering performance parts for it. I've decided on Konig Tantrum 17" wheels and Yokohama AVS ES100 tires with Eibach Springs. But what i really want to know is what i should do for HORSEPOWER. So far my list is
1. AEM Cold Air Intake
2. DC Sports 4-2-1 Headers
3. Apexi N1 exhaust
4. AEM Cam Gears and Pullys
5. MSD or Venom Ignition kit

and possibly new throttle body, fuel rail, intake manifold and cam shaft IF i can get the money (i'm a 17 year old....)

Give me some advice on if that list is good or if there is some other stuff i should or shouldnt get... thanks a lot

hope you like loud *** exhaust.. haha. you seem to be on the right track with your list. stick with msd as far as the ignition, though. Cams and cam gears are a great help to putting some hp down. Coupled with the mods you listed, you'll have a nicely equipped car that's worthy of those ES100's.

If you are planning on adding some FI on there then I suggest you don't get the intake and the header(unless your getting the JRSC).
But so far those mods would get you somewhere around 18-24hp

1. AEM Cold Air Intake-3-4hp 3trq
2. DC Sports 4-2-1 Headers- 2-3hp 1.5trq(?)
3. Apexi N1 exhaust- 3-5hp
4. AEM Cam Gears and Pullys- 10hp
5. MSD or Venom Ignition kit- .5hp

IMO

is it auto or stick? Vtec or Si?

your probaly getting less than 18 hp, realistically with all the parts your looking around a gain of 6-10 hp.

Save your money and go FI

dont get DC sports, IMO, its not a good brand. get a VAFC (if its vtec) and get cams wtih those cam gears, then tune it. you should get some decent hp w[ith that

Don't go with AEM cam gears....STR or Skunk2 are much better makers

I agree, but us H23's don't have many good choices for headers...but DC is definitely better than the stock piece on the H23

What makes those brands so much better than AEM? Besides that Skunk 2 is a bit lighter?

kidaniel,

what kind of horsepower and torque numbers have you seen with your mods? the only reason i ask is cause i have a 97 SS lude with similar bolt ons and i'm about to get my APEXi VTEC controller installed and tuned and i wanted to know what gains i can expect from tuning.

fellow SS luder,
GT Pete

to be very realistic...the 17" rims are going to slow you down..and quite dramatically at that..secondly...i know you didnt list it, but if you bought all those mods new for the most part, your looking at some good cash, if you want performance...youd be better off saving the money and dropping in an h22 long block..thats a 40hp difference right off the bat....if your planning on going turbo which is a possibility, then keeping your motor is a good choice, but looking back, the swap opened an entirely different breed of HP and speed, BTW the vtec motor also responds better to mods like i/e/ect...mainly due to the larger cam profile...and if your just looking for something peppy, add some bolt ons and throw your 17s on it..ill admit i like the look of bigger rims, but ill prob never get them, because of how horribly they robbed me of speed...i ran 7 tenths slower, on the same days, multiple runs, between my old directional rims, and a set of 17 momos..im completely sold that the best places to lose weight is on the wheels..which is why im getting some 15" slipstreams..peace

I have to see pictures of 15" wheels on a prelude. If you have some, please IM me the links to them or something. I have never seen anything smaller than a 16" wheel.

Kidaniel, I'd much rather have the 6 bolts that Skunk2 provides or the 5 that STR provides, rather than, the 3 bolt design AEM is sporting.

eight horsepower? lol as you can probably tell i am just starting to really get into cars.... anyways, so if the prelude comes stock with 135hp. With intake, headers, exhaust, cams gears, pullys, and MSD ignition, im only lookin at 143 hp? that is weak. Laugh if you must, but what is all of this stuff on websites "headers add 15 hp" "exhaust adds 15 hp" "intake adds 10 hp". I live in Traverse City (not one of the biggest car racing towns in the world) so i don't need a crazy fast rocket car, but enough to sh*t on those stock honda civics with a muffler and rims, and a few MUSTANGS if possible.

if that's a PreludeS you're running, it would be a big mistake to do anything other than swap the engine

well, if your running in an S model prelude, then your not going to gain much power at all...if its an SI it will be peppy..but certainly not fast by any means..and my point was..you can buy and h22 for 1500 which is easily less than youd spend on those mods and wheels, and its less expiensive by far...and then youll be starting out at 200hp..much better platform...and BTW ant h23 ot f22, is going to have real trouble against any Mustang GT... but you cuold take the V6s with ease..and also..ALL 4th gen Prelude, which is what this guy has have 15" wheels for stocks, they didnt go to 16s until 97-up for the 5th gens

Doesn't necessarily mean it's better than AEM though. I used to think that Skunk 2 was better because it was lighter and had more bolts so it wouldn't slip as easily. BUT supposedly AEM still has better gains and just because it has just 3 bolts doesn't mean it will slip easily, unless you don't tighten it correctly.

just my .02

Look in my sig

And as far as doing cam gears before getting more aggressive cams doesn't make much sense. However, F all that you're gonna get maybe 8 - 10 WHP. Do what preluderacer said and just get an H22, then mod the H22 and you will get much more significant HP gains.
