Default Ball bearing turbos can handle compressor surge?

There was a mention of this in SCC in their article for blow off valves... Is this really true and would it be worth the extra $$, given the faster spool as well?

I think "handle it" in this case means that your average ball bearing turbo won't blow up quite as quickly if you leave the BOV out. Compressor surge will reduce the lifespan of any turbo though.

Hey, I was reading up on all this turbo stuff and was wondering why factory cars that have BB turbos still run diverter or blow-off valves. You'd think the bean counters would be thinking the same thing... skimp on a not so nessacery item.

NOT!!!

BTW, I'm using a friend's Apexi IHI turbo as a dash ornament. (Replaced my dancing hula skirt girl.) He didn't get a BOV either. Boy you should see the shaft play on that badboy. I got extra points at the last show I was at for that...
