Default Budget suspension choices...

Well I was popping around on the tire rack site and saw some interesting choices. These all cost about the same, any recommendations for autox and street...

1. Koni Coilovers http://www.tirerack.com/suspen...n+Kit

2. H&R Coilovers (reg not road race only) http://www.tirerack.com/suspen...n+Kit

3. Tien SS Coilovers

Each are about $800-900.

What class do you compete in?

Stock suspension is THE budget choice.

I will most likely be in street modified, since i have done a y8 swap in place of my y5. and since i will be classed there, I will likely do some headwork and poss a JRSC since i can get one dirt cheap.

Run Ground Control coilover sleeves with Koni or Bilstein shocks.

Good luck with your knife in the gunfight (SOHC Civic in SM).

That just means driver skill must compensate

I can see the look on the faces of the people, who paid 3x as much for their DOHC, getting owned by a SOHC

But that was Street Prepared, not Street Modified... The power rules are quite different between the two classes.

LOL!

The FWD Hondas are ALL at a disadvantage.

I was referring to the "guns" that are the supercharged E36 M3s that roam the class.

Hey y'all...........I took my GS-R Turbo out Auto X-ing today for the first time ever, and I got OWNED in the SM (street mod) class, even in our Novice division (10th of 17), since they have a correction factor to place all novices against each other, regardless of class. This just goes to show me what having a turbo on a car with no suspension work can do.

I'm now looking to add a Type R rear swaybar, and I heard shocks on stock springs can even do wonders if one wants to keep their daily driven stock ride height. Any suggestions (other than "lose the turbo")?

Seriously, you'll be owned for a year or so. Get more seat time, and try to have an experience driver ride alongside to give you pointers. Skills first - mods later.

Of course I need more experience...

But I've competed in SCCA A-Mod before with UT's Formula Car. All the other drivers around said I was driving the Teg for all she was worth out there, and that I was doing amazing for a novice. "Sewiously Folks", though I could get faster with more practice, my car is in the worst possible state to be competitive in my class. Suspension mods are a must at this point. I rode with other drivers, and I had these drivers ride with me. Their cars are just setup for Auto-X, and mine is not. Thanks again.

Hey, Nikolai, I was there, and a friend caught one of your runs on tape (I think) and I'll try to get it posted for you. From the outside view it looks like body roll is your enemy.

The Type-R bar would be a good place to start (I didnt catch what tires you're on). Getting a Rear bar on the 02 Si sure helped me get some control.

If you're up for some more seat-time:

Sunday, June 15 auto-x at the Alamodome in S.A.: http://www.conehunter.com/schedule.html
Texas A&M practice June 21-22 at Riverside Annex (an old airstrip): http://tamscc.tamu.edu/schedule.html

Thanks Hatch!

Were you out there yesterday? I'm on Pirelli P4000's (nice quiet touring tire, but terrible for Auto-X), on stock rims, springs and shocks. Yeah, I'd love to grab some more seat time, though I like to make it to church also. It looks like I'll try to get out to the A&M practice on the 21st. The new Si's that were there yesterday seemed pretty competitive, time-wise, but I think most of them were on aftermarket shocks and springs.

From what I gather, I could grab some stiffer springs on adjustable perches, in order to keep a near-stock ride height whenever I'm not racing. I've read/heard that stiffer springs in the rear will lessen the under-steer problem, but won't that make it feel strange driving on the street? Typically, cars are designed with ride rates that are 10% less in the back, so the car will level out after a bump hits the front before the rear.

A very beefy RARB, like the 23mm JDM ITR piece would allow me to run softer springs in the rear, relative to the front, compared to the stiffer springs others are running in the rear relative to the front, to alleviate excessive understeer.

New shocks are a must, too, so how much benefit would I see from something with adjustable damping, like Illuminas?

Thanks in advanced!
Nick

The white 02Si was lowered with Progress springs and stock shocks. We both have rear sway bars and Falken Tires. I was in the silver one, totally stock springs and dampers.

Just give it time, and you'll get used to the car.
