Honda MTF - is it worth it?
My Prelude 4G has 84.000km (55.000miles) and had geared perfecly. I think there was still original oil in the transmission. Now I have changed the oil for some 10W40 semi-syntetic and the gearing now seems not as smooth as before the change. Is it because of the oil? Should I buy original Honda manual transmission fluid and change it back?
I may not understand you correctly... Are you saying that you put OIL instead of Manual Transmission Fluid in when you changed the fluid?
I've heard of people doing that, but I always thought it was a big No No!

The manual actually says 10w30 motor oil. A special grade like SG is required however, but didnt seem to make a difference for me, 2nd gear said bye bye anyways.
Yes, the Helms really says "Use only 10W-30 or 10W-40, SF or SG grade" so I thought standard 10W-40 should be ok. The same (SF or SG grade) is recomended for the engine, so I put the same oil in the engine and into the transpmission. The bad gearing is nothing major, it still doesn't grind or anything else. But before, moving the shifter was a bit smoother.

actually honda didnt make a special MTF until around 97 or something and all their transmissions from the factory had just regular 10w-30 or 40. So im sure the MTF is better, but regualr oil isnt something your tranny hasnt had before. My local honda dealership doesn't even stock the honda MTF and if you go in for a tranny fluid change there they just put in regualar motor oil on all cars.
honda mtf is great stuff within a reasonable price.
very cheap from the dealer. i used to use motor oil in my old h22a accord. the tranny just never felt right after using the oil.
went to honda mtf and never looked back. also used it on my 93vtec.

I have always used two quarts of mobil 1 15W-50. The tranny has a quaife, and has put up with lots of street driving and track/autoX abuse. Still shifts great. No problems.
I have asked that question about redline before. I was told from everyone that it worked pretty well on nissans. But for some reason it didnt work so good w/ hondas. They all recommend that I stick w/ honda mtf, which I did.
from my experience, i use to use motor oil, and it never did felt right to me, it seem very loose, after changing to red line MTF, it felt a whole lot better, the shifter got a litter harder, it stop grining, tranmission oil was made for tranmission and engine oil are made for engine,

I'd like to know that too!
I've been using Honda MTF and I'm going to try the Redline MTL at 60k. I'm at about 54k now.

i just ran over the counter 10w30 in mine, still have all the gears but they grind a little in the winter when it is below zero, but that might also be cause my clutch is shot and not releasing all the way
I've been changing mine with Honda MTF every 15K or so. It not really expensive so I've been sticking to using it instead of other recommendations such as GM Syncromesh/Redline.
Redline is good for about 5000 miles then it starts crunching like no other. I had a very hard time getting the car into first from a complete stop MANY times with redline. I'm never going to use their MTF again.
Switched over to Honda MTF at that time and even though it's not quite as slick going into the gears now, it's a much better feeling and it lasts much longer. Going on 20k miles and just yesterday the notchniess is starting to come back but that might of been due to the weather. I'll probably replace it soon.
