Default Rolling in neutral...

Stupid question, but how bad is it to coast a car in neutral?

I would not recommend rolling over like 15 mph in neutral, why would you want to? Just shift down...

Uhhh, how on EARTH could rolling in neutral be bad for a car? Not over 15MPH? That makes no sense... I do it just cause sometimes I dont feel like downshifting to a red light, just flick it out of gear and coast to a stop. No idea why it would be harmful... EV.

Wow some people on here are pretty ignorant.
Rolling in neatral when your not racing is a smart idea.
It keeps your motor from being worn prematurely.

Downshifting constantly between stoplight to stoplight will add huge gobs of
wear and tear on your motor. Sure its more fun but when your not racing what is the point of dropping gears when you can just put the car into neutral and wear your brakes down instead of the motor?

First time I heard that... lol
I've been throwing my car in neutral at any speed for the last 11 years and have never had any problems. I would think it would be much less wear. Syncros don't get used, clutch doesn't get used, engine doesn't get used. How in the world could it be bad???

i cant speak for all states... but i know here in VA and probably in others. coasting in neutral is illegal. It does impede the ability to accelerate quickly if needed.

Illegal? Wow is that ever lame.
I heard someone on here talking about how its illegal in some states to pump your own gas. These laws treat us like were stupid.

Bottom line. Rolling in neutral is being careful about engine wear.

Radar detectors are illegal here in Canada.
Its ok for the cops to do whatever they want to invade your privacy, radar you on the highway, photo radar, heat detection and so on, as far as im concerned citizens should be able to use preventative methods to avoid speeding tickets and or police harassment. Last time i checked it wasnt illegal to park in a coffee shop parking lot and have a coffee but the cops around here use it as an excuse to check for illegal mods on our cars.

Actually in some states, it is "ILLEGAL" and will net you a ticket if you're caught rolling in neutral.

Check with your local laws.

And how exactly do they hope to catch anybody rolling in neutral?

no its not bad to roll in neautral.
Even at 143 mph it wouldnt be bad.
Yes its better than shifting down through every gear during daily driving.
Racing however is a different story...
downshift on the road course.

1. Radar Detectors are LEGAL in Alberta, Canada. Not anywhere else though, well, dunno the laws up in the Yukon, NWT etc. though!

2. Rolling in neutral does saves wearable motor components, uses more brakes obviously. It's healthier for the car not to downshift too often.

I don't know why everyone is making a big deal out of it. Rolling in neutral is not bad... unless you're ticketed for it.

It's bad on an auto. But on a stick it saves engine wear. Now is it bad to roll in gear with the clutch in?

As long as the clutch is either A) fully engaged or B) not engaged at all. It's fine.

Clutch wear happens when the clutch is being ridden a.k.a in between engaged and disengaged. People who drive around with their foot on the clutch to moderate alot are the one's who end up having to replace it every 6k miles.
