Default Q about pump gas with jdm engines

I was recently talkin to a guy who was helping his friend perform a jdm honda engine swap and said once it was all done the engine wouldnt even run without a lot of octane booster. my question is, have any of you ever had to do this? ive never heard of it happening before and this guy didnt seem like he was too inteligent when it came to japs. just wondering

Definitely, he sounds like a doofus. My engine runs just peachy on 92 or 94 octane gas (though I usually use 94). If he's running crazy compression I could understand, but if the internals are stock...

well i had the feeling he didnt know what he was talkin about. he definately knew a lot about domestics but he was saying that the only reason jdm reasons were more powerful was because they have 108 octane in japan. oh well

i think the biggest difference is in turbo jdm engines--sr20det,wrx,toyota 2.5tt---i hear that they have 100 octane at the pumps and most of the ecu's are programmed to run best on 100 octane with almost no emissions equipment....but they work ok on 93 from what i hear

they have a more aggressive timing curve so that is how they get the extra 8 hp or so plus they run a little higher compression so i'd just try 89 and if it knocks any maybe try 92 but you wont need octane boosters pump gas is fine.

i used to run 87-89 and then 91-92-94 octane, with the 87-89 ecu retards the timing and the motor hasitates a little at lower rpm....91+ cures the problem...

also JDM gas is RON rating not "pump rating", which is used in canada and US, so their 100 ocatne is about 94-96 octane....

the guys is a crazy wacko, my b16a use 94 and runs great the only reason that could have come out of his stupid little pea of a size brain is that in japan the gas is much more richer than the gas we have here but he couldnt have posably known that.

it seems like everybody does not use octane booster. well i use it in my JDM B16. in utah the pump gas is only 91 octane. and so i use the NOS octane booster (off-road formula) it is suppose to increase octane points by like 7 points. i notice a major difference when i use the octane booster, better milage and better acceleration. thats as close as i can get to the octane they use in Japan

The octane ratings are different. Their 100 octane is only like 94 here.

correct, they use RON for octane rating, while here we use (RON+MON)/2, so they're pretty much the same thing.

I found that my hybrid likes the Redline Fuel System treatment. Otherwise I just run 92 non ethanol
