Drove a 996 Turbo Sunday!
So, I'm at a neighborhood cookout Sunday talking with the owner of a silver 2001 Porsche AWD Turbo. He says the car scares him a little and he wants to do a PCA school some day. I encourage him to do so and tell him that I've helped instruct PCA, and other events at VIR. (I'm thinking.."please offer me a ride") He says "Well, we better go for a drive now before we start on our second beers". (YES!)He drives first and .... well it's just a good thing the car is very forgiving. Mid-corner lifts, rough shifts, etc. He lets me have a turn and I treat it very kind at first to gain his trust, and he encourages me to push it harder. Although I stayed well with in my limits, and the car's, it was a great experience. How does it accelerate? well, you'd better be looking WAY down the road when you roll into the throttle 'cause you are going to be there VERY soon! Big power, real flat torque curve, virtually no turbo lag, and good 'ole Porsche brakes.
. The first time I heel/toe downshifted he looks over at me puzzled and said "what the hell was that? I didn't even feel you shift".
(side note, I almost wore flip flops to the cookout, but as luck would have it, I chose my top siders
)
My afternoon of automotive heaven lasted about 30 minutes. I thanked him numerous times for the opportunity to drive his $100,000+ car and wrote down VIR's web site for him so he could pick an HPDE event to run.

You lucky bastard! I got to drive a ~'98 non-turbo 996 last summer while in Calif. visiting family and friends in So. Cal. The car was my friend's newest track vehicle (full cage, Momo seats, harnesses, fuel cell, and a very sweet suspension setup). Clearly not the same straight-away performance machine that you drove, but it was adequately powerful, and the handling was so tight and crisp that it would be very hard to put into words.... Mmmmm, yummy! I've had Porsche envy ever since.

I would have to agree...don't want the safety nuns breaking out their soapboxes, do you?
Maybe they can come after you because you took advantage of his drunkenness to zip around in his pimpy car.

Speaking of driving turbo Porcshes, i got to take a Porsche Cayenne Turbo out for abotu 30mins last week. No turbo lag at all, 0-60 is instataneous. I didn't take it over 70, even on the freeways, i was to afraid of it
It actually has quite a bit of room, and could be a practical daily driver, except for the gas mileage, its rated @ 13mpg city/18mpg hwy.
