need advice broke this bolt on motor
ok i was putting in my cams and i was tighting the bolts that hold the cams and the cam plates on and all was good till the last little bolt in the pic below the bolt jut snapped and it didnt even feel like it was getting tight i was so suprised but all the other bolts are nice and tight. i dont know what to do now what will happen to my motor since this bolt snapped?
get a set of left hand drill bits, dip the bit in bearing grease, and try to remove it. if it inst cross threaded, it should walk right out. if not drill a pilot hole in it and get an easy out. it is a 6mm bolt. it shouldnt be that tight. oh and did you ask me if it was ok to steal that pic? its cool. j.k.
sorry bout that i needed an example to show... thanx for that pic bro, but what will happen to my motor if i dont get that bolt out is it going to cause severe damage? i mean all the other bolts are perfect just that one is missing what will happen?
it is only a 6mm bolt but honda designed it there. i mean the torque spec is under 10 ft.lb. so there isnt really a big load bearing there but like i said honda designed it there. it isnt hard to remove, but if you havent done it i cant really elaborate on it. basically you need ti drill a hole down the center of the bolt. if you didnt cross thread it, a left hand bit (drill turns counter clockwise) should walk it out. but if that doesnt, a small hole in the center of it will allow you to use an easy out. you may have a cam seal sealing problem if you dont use it. and the stealing was a joke i wish i could help you out more. if it were in front of me i mean.
yea i know it definately didnt cross thread at all it went in really smooth i mean i threaded it with my finger till it stopped then used the 10 mm to tighten it and it just snapped i guess it was kinda old and tired lol, but i mean can i hold off in doign this for maybe at least a week or 2 untill i get time to do it? and get the required drill bits u said i need cuz i dont have them and cant get them this week. how long do u think it will be ok for?

i honestly cant say. it may never pose a problem. but then again, it may. if you have to drive it, be easy with it. goodl uck either way.

id take it to a pro, they deal with this stuff all the time and its not like you are going to spend a complete arm and a leg on them potentially saving you from really screwing your engine up. actually this is the only scenario when i would ever consider professional help on installation.

yea i know but i have no time untioll the weekdn cuz i work till 6:30 everyday and this is my only car i want to know if it will last a week untill i fix it or will something go bad and blow the motor up?
i dont know about whether it is safe or not, i dont know who would be able to answer that in full faith, but as i always say "better safe than sorry". id get a ride to work
I broke one of those on my H22. I didnt have time to repair it at the time so i just left it alone. After about 2 weeks i had forgotten about it and had no problems. Its not gonna hurt anything not having it there but i would get it fixed when i had the chance. Dont worry about it ******* anything up though. The bolt youre pointing out isnt one of the main bolts that holds the caps down which are black it is the little punny silver ones. No big deal. Just dont forget about it.

That's funny! I had the same problem on the sam bolt. It's only supposed to be torqued down to 7 foot pounds(I found out after the fact). The new bolt is just under $2 from honda. Oh yeah, I did this to my daily driver too. If you need to drive it, make sure all the other bolts are torqued to spec and try and keep your rpm as low as possible. I had to drive like that for 2 day's til I could get the time to fix it.
i have a replacement bolt laying around i just need to get the old one out. and i guess im going to have to go to a shop to get it done, how much do u think a shop will charge to get it out? and what kind of shop do i take it to? a regular shop or machine shop?
I'd just take to a regular shop, even though a machine shop would be able to do it to. Be looking to pay at least 1 hour shop time. But I guess it would depend on how hard it is to get the old one out.
Sears or Home Depot carries ezout stuff to remove it. They work perfectly, try that first, just make sure to not do anything to the head, just the bolt.
are their directions that come with the ezout? is it pretty much straight foward? the bolt is not cross threaded at all i just snapped the head off. thanx for the advice guys
drill a hole dead center. 1/2 the diameter of the bolt. like 3/16". theneasy out will help you turn it out. you have to drill the hole pretty straight though.
You know what? Exactly two weeks ago, I was doing a valve adjustment on my SOHC engine and I broke the exact same bolt. It just snapped like a twig!! It was slightly counter-sunk in there when it broke.
I tried drilling it out with screw extractors, but with no luck. It's hard to get a hand drill to drill into the center. Also, the metal surrounding the broken bolt is aluminium. A couple spins of the drill on those threads and they are GONE!
Now, with 75% stripped threads, I can't install a bolt until I take off the head and bring it to the machine shop to drill out the bolt. Before you try any drilling or anything ( like me ) do this :
If your bolt is level with the head or even if it is a little counter sunk, you can take a dremel tool and try to grind a slot into the broken bolt. Make sure you cover the head with a towel or something before you start. Once you have carefully grinded a slot onto the screw, just grab a nice big slot screwdriver and twist it out. If you haven't drilled it already, it should still be pretty loose in there.
See if that works, only try to drill it out if that doesn't work.

Oh yeah, it should be OK driving around with that bolt broken. I've been driving it everyday for the past two weeks with no oil leaks. There isn't much pressure under the valve covers anyways. However you should try to fix it as soon as you can.
