as long as the tool you are using has a smooth surface and does not mar the plug...and i use a universal gapping disk that has the tapered edge

Matco disk plug gapper... My buddy uses feeler gauges! 
Now, to close the gap, I usually tap it fairly harshly on the radiator support.
