Any downsides to always having your Check engine light on, besides being annoying
i may just get a custom exhaust straight pipe 2.5" right after the header to the muffler......
i can get the whole thing for 200 bucks, so i'm cheaping out on getting the OBD Ii testpipe thang

bad gas mileage, performance
, believe me you don't want that CEL on - don't do it unless you get your ECU moded to bypass the O2 sensor first

just get an o2 bung and weld it onto the straight pipe after the header. it won't cost too much and rolling with the cel will definetly decrease your cars performance...
no VTEC in safe mode (the CEL on).
engine will run extra rich to avoid what it thinks are problems.
get a O2 bung and have a shop weld it in .. prolly a $45 job.
that should help.

You will more than likely pull a CEL regardless of whether you have the O2 in there or not. The secondary o2's job is to measure a differance from the primary o2. I have pulled CEL for a couple of thing's and have not hit limp home mode yet but I am pretty sure you do with a o2 code pulling.
Does anybody know roughly how much hp is lost on an obd1 gsr with the cel on (running in safe mode, duh)? I've been running around for a month in safe mode after the swap and i finally figured out my iac connector was busted.

Hmmm... I guess my car is weird. Mine actually runs better when the check engine light is on...
I keep on blowing a code 45 (system too rich).
Weird.

I would rather smoke some crack and ride around on my BIG WHEEL - LOL
, & pick up me some 400lb ho's for a ride (note: i'm NOT trying to start a flame war

I just purchased a carsound cat and I'm still getting a cel even though it's not a straight pipe. the cel came on a couple days after the cat was installed. Don't know anything about limp mode. I feel the same amount of power with the cel on as i did before when the cel was not on. is there really such thing as limp mode? when i pull the fuse to reset the ecu, the cel goes away, but comes back on after driving around for a little while. I know it's coming on because of the cat - it's thowing code 67 (cat failure)
I cant speak for everyone. But I have had the CEL on for a while and have felt absolutely no performance loss. Yes there is a limp mode, but I dont believe it will go into limp mode because of the cat O2. And who ever said vtec doesnt work with the CEL on is crazy. Because I just hit VTEC about 5 min ago w/ the CEL on. I dont think that the secondary o2 will cause you any major perforamce loss. Gasmileage possibly though. Just my $.02
comptechgsr-The check light you will get from the second O2 sensor will not make the car go into limp mode. It will be annoying, but the main thing is if you get another code from a different sensor you will not know that something is wrong.
T is right... depending on the code the ECU throws it may or may not put you in limp mode. Minor problems will only illuminate the CEL light. Major problems like MAP sensor error, Low oil pressure, etc will cause it to jump into LIMP mode. Otherwise, with just the CEL on, no power is lost and this is proven on the dyno.
Our Project Integra (OBDII) ran around with the CEL light on constantly (code 45, code 2, code 67, code 71-74) and we still ran 300whp/250lb with 12 second passes at the track.
With CEL on or OFF, the power was the same and this was done on our sponsors dyno.
Please verify your facts before spitting them out for others.

Wow, I apoligize for the wrong information. I had thought with any CEL light on the engine would go into limp mode. My bad.
On OBD-II ecus, the car will go in "limp" mode if the CEL is a VTEC problem. A problem associated with a test pipe, will not cause your car to run in limp mode and will run normal.
However, with the light on you will not notice another problem since the light is already lit.
On OBD-1 ecus, I believe any CEL will activate "limp" mode.

Here is my argument. If you drive around with the CEL on and another code comes on how the hell are you gonna know?
My friends Turbo LS has a code 7 and we cant seem to get rid of it. His car runs very rich, could a cel cause the car to run rich?
yes a CEL can cause the car to run rich that is the point
to protect the car....flood w/ fuel and ya cant go lean. It is a safety feature
