Better filter for your J's Racing's intake! iky
With the surge of new J's Racing Intake owners within the past few months, i've realized that there are variations in regards to what type/style of filter came with the intake kit.
If you were lucky, you'd have gotten a very nice and expensive K&N filter element with a Titanium top.
Some intakes were supplied with a generic chrome-top filter element. While most recently a generic cone style filter inside a removable faux carbon fibre heatshield was used.
My intake came with the generic chrome filter, as you'll see later below.
I've never been a fan of non-K&N aftermarket air filter, so after a little bit of searching I found a nice K&N replacement filter that will compliment the carbon fibre J's intake quite nicely. Kengs mentioned that you folks might find this information useful, so here goes nothing...
Here's a list of all K&N filters that will accomodate the J's intake, including the one I chose.
Apparently, not all J's intake came with the grommet to allow for attachment of the crankcase vent tube. So I also picked up the appropriate K&N breather filter.

Quality carbon fibre. Better than the J's intake pipe
Longer
But narrower
p.s. Seeing as to how the following two words is ubiquitous with any thread concerning the J's intake, I figured i'd become the lemming and follow suit: throttle response.
Enjoy it.

Ok, I cant tell what type of filter I have. Mine has a metallic finish to the rim but doesnt look like yours, does that mean I got the titanium one?
raying:
Also, does that have any fitment problems? I remember it being very snug already and with a greater length I fear that it maynot fit past the front bumper. And has anyone tried the Apexi one yet? I heard that is the best filter you can buy....

Here's my question for you Mario.
My J's (when I had it) was about 1/4" away from the radiator overflow. There is no way I could have made the J's intake + K&N Cylindrical (longer, but narrower) fit without re-positioning my radiator overflow.
That is, if I am reading your thread correctly and you are supporting the cylindrical K&N over the Conical J's filter.

This information rocks - thanks. I was jsut getting ready to start measuring my J's intake to find a suitable K&N replacement.
How was the fitment? Do you have any photos of the new filter installed?

Thanks! I'm gonna give pepboys a try today.
I wonder what the difference in surface area is between the two filters...
The K&N is taller and narrower and the J's filter is conical and has some surface area "inside" the cone...

i already have a k&n filter on my j's...here is the part number, RT-4610, fits perfectly....the dimensions are at this link http://www.knfilters.com/universal/univrndtap.htm
results:
3-5whp up top, dyno graph to prove it
if anyone is interested also, i am selling my j's intake with this filter and the original filter with carbon fiber heat shield for 200.00/obo next week. i will have pics up on sunday or monday of everything.

Perhaps you should push the filter further back into the piping, so the lip of the intake pipe is flush with the flange. But not so much that it protrudes into the filter chamber itself. That should give you a bit more room to work with.
I measured my stock J's filter @ 4.5" long.
The chrome 4.5" K&N filter listed will absolutely fit, and the 5.0" ones should too.
