I just saw this on the news VERY IMPORTANT!!
I apologize to the mods for posting this in the tech forum, however due to the "noob" status I still hold I found this place to be a good choice where everyone checks up on from time to time.
Their is a new breed of car theives now. No longer do they break in to your car to gain entry. They just walk up to it and unlock the door as if they own it. I saw on the news a few days back that you can go to ANY car dealership and present a fake i.d., make, model, year(honda dealership for a honda key etc..) of a car along with the VIN # that you copied down from the car that they choose to steal and say that they "lost their key and need a replacement" with NO QUESTIONS ASKED. VERY FEW dealerships asked for more proof of ownership of that car before they made the key and handed it to the undercover reporter.
COVER YOUR VIN # WITH SOME DUCT TAPE!!
ALSO, many car theives are going to a web site called http://www.masterCARkey.com (or something similar to that) and ordering a MASTER KEY for ANY brand of car chevy, ford etc.. for only $25. They can just go to a WAL-MART and its like a freebie day for them.
To protect yourself from this, get a hidden starter kill switch and have it shut off every time you leave your vehicle unattended.
Maybe make this a sticky? Who knows....
Just thought I'd share this with the rest of the crew...PEACE

well just to let you know one of the masterkey messege forums was shut down, thanks to alot of members of honda-tech
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=506612
but take a piece of black electrical tape, and cover up your VIN.
certain model civics/integras can use rear-4dr lock inserts and get those painted to shave your door locks, and the trunk is metal so that lock can be shaved as well.

This is precisely why car security, as with, most other security implementations should follow a layered approach....
1. Cover your VIN (I use a business card, faced down)
2. Install a car alarm.
3. Use a club.
4. Use an auto lock.
5. I installed LS door handles in my R. LS handles do not incorporate the door lock/unlock switch as do the stock R handles have.
6. Install a hidden kill switch.
7. I also disconnect an ignition wire when parking... stick it in my trunk.
A thief would have to really, really want the car... if they do, then nothing will save you short of an armed guard.

The topic has been discussed at length, you can cover your vin, but some people actually have their number burned into the glass on each piece...take a look sometime, I could`nt think of a more stupid idea on the part of a car dealership

FWIW, I'm pretty sure that is illegal
FWIW, I'm pretty sure that is illegal
ATTENTION!!! This is sooooo easy to remedy!!
JUST RE-KEY your car!!!
Covering up your VIN number is ILLEGAL!!
Do what i did and change out your door locks...its easy to remove them and just take them to your local lock smith and have them re-keyed it costs around 15bux each....
trust me it works and is well worth the peice of mind...
Also layer your car protection too autolock OWNZ

Then you have two keys for the car.
I like the fuel pump switch. Can't start the car, it isn't going anywhere.

it can still get towed....
for start kills check this out... I have to thank pdiggitydogg though.. he linked it on another site... it's the best diy one I've ever seen.

this one CAN NOT be dis-abled... even if they know EXACTLY how it's wired.

oh and ps... you can get into ANY car with a framed driver/pass. window in about 10 secs... my buddy who works at a station showed me the other day... it was SCARY... the only one's his trick doesn't work on are cars w/o a frame built onto the door (for the window to seat in... example lexus es300, wrx etc. so when the door is open the glass is the top there is no frame.)
edit... oh and covering your vin isn't illegal unless you can't uncover it when asked by an official.. moving it I think is illegal... part of it's legitamacy is based on those factory rivets... if they're gone it's under suspicion for being a stolen car.

I seriously doubt police ever check to see if you have covered your VIN # with tape. The last couple times i've been pulled over for "spirited driving" they didnt even come to my side of the car to look at it. And what is a theif going to do if he see's that you have covered your VIN #...call the cops?? LOL All i'm saying is that its not that big of a deal, if the cops want to see it...just pull the tape.
