Default Valves, VALVES, Oh the carbon buildup!!

I currently have my head off and theres alot of carbon buildup on my valves. I'm just wondering if theres anything I SHOULDN'T do if cleaning these valves like, keep them smooth, don't use a wire brush, don't use thinner.

Thanks!

Are you having the valve seats recut while it's off? If so, the machine shop will hot tank everything so don't bother cleaning it all up.

no, I'm just taking all the valves out, giving the head a mild port and polish myself, getting the head resurfaced and new springs maybe... I'm not goina go all out because come next year I'll have a new engine.

if you are going through the labor of pulling the head apart, I would first get the head cleaned so it's easier to work on(so you can see what your doing)and you don't have to smell the carbon when you grind on it. while your at the machine shop have them bead blast the valves , make sure they don't do the stems.then have them resurface the valves.
Port the head and bring it back to them to get the valve job redone.
As I said before if your going to go through the labor of pulling the head apart to do porting you might as well do it right and spend a little more money on the things that make your job easier and your job come out better---just my 2 cents worth

Well, the only thing is I'm just goina keep this engine for a year and then get a B16A or B18c1. Its really just goina be something so if my Mustang breaks down or when it starts snowing (for now that is). Its just a simple D15A1 so I'm not goina break out the checkbook and go crazy on it. I pretty much want it to work as well or better then what it did before the headgasket blew.

You'd hate to go to all this time and trouble only to put the motor back together and find out you've got a valve that's not sealing properly. For $150, I got a competiton valve job and everything hot-tanked at my local machine shop. That's less than you'll probably spend on gaskets and seals.

Do a half-assed job, expect a half-assed result.

OEM Honda Headgasket - $45
Head Bolts - $50
Intake and exhaust gasket - $30
Valve cover and sparkplug rings in head - $28
TB Gasket - $7
Head resurface - $30

I know somebody with 150k miles on their car, they blew one of their headgaskets (V6), replaced them both even without resurfacing the head and they're doing pretty damn well.

I'm not goina use this engine for racing. I just want it to run correctly. If I find something out of place then I will fix it or get it fixed, other then that, this car isn't even going 30 miles from my home until I get it finished.

Don't worry, I'll be fine. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Edit : 94CivicSi - Went through your page with your B16A rebuild, thats pretty damn nice! I take it you already have it installed?

Thanks man. It'll be done in a week or 2. I just need a header and a couple of other misc. parts. I'll be back with some "installed" pics by mid-June.

Good luck with the port job!
