I have a foam filter right now and my understanding is, it may flow better than a K&N, but it doesn't filter as well. So, that's my question...what harm is there to the engine if too many dirt particles are getting sucked in?

They can put little scratches in your cylinder walls, lowering compression.

Dust and dirt building up on your valves, throttle body.

Remember all of the tanks/vehicles in Iraq, their engines were seizing up due to the fine sand getting through their filters.

Did you oil your foam filter?

I have a foam filter also, and it works wonders!

Yeah, I do. I use the K&N cleaning kit.

Also, what is blowby, exactly?

blowby is when the air fuel mix explodes inside the combustion chamber some of it goes around the piston and into the oil pan. this is blow by and is very bad for your oil. the pcv valve gets rid of it if it is working correctly.

So, if the PCV valve is new, I shouldn't have to worry about blowby, should I?

You'll still be getting blowby even if the pcv valve is working but it wont be as damaging either way blowby results in lower compression equaling less power
