Default Got the swap done in my Hatch. Review, pics, etc....longish

I was done a while back with the swap, but lazy to post about it.

D16y7 = 35k on car =

Get that sucka out!

Car was like this for only a couple hours.

Mmmm....b18c1.

Done....

Issues with swap. My first swap was a 99 Si into 97 Hx. I was much more prepared this time around, but this had a couple things happen I didn't expect.

Wiring...cake this time. I was well prepared. Purchased a 99-00 Si engine wire harness. Had to add IAB wiring, and secondary O2 sensor wiring. Temp sender wire had to be extended, a VTEC wire had to be exteneded, IAT sensor plug had to be changed to GSR style, and I had to move the fuel pump pin at the ECU. Used the 2001 GSR ECU that came with the swap, Immobilizer removed by Katman.

Installing engine Went smooth, no major problems. B series definitatly a tighter fit then the D series though. Used GSR shift linkage. I like the feel better then the Si linkage I had before. Shift **** also seems lower.

Throttle Cable This pissed me off. Both the GSR cable, and CX cable left me with more slop in the line then I could adjust out with the nuts. No matter what I couldn't get full throttle with the pedal to the floor. So i rigged the cable with the rubber grommet from the Cx cable so I have 2 where there would normally be one.

Exhuast B18c1 exhuast didn't bolt up so I made this adaptor. The stock exhuast was too short, and the flange didn't line up. 1 7/8x1 7/8 adaptor and U bolt straps.

Radiator B18c1 radiator hoses don't fit stock radiator(too big) so I invested in a Del Sol VTEC dual core radiator by Koyo. Very worth it, high quality, and alot THICKER. $126 at http://www.radiators.com/price...46712

Driving

Much Much better. Having owned the b16 in a coupe before, this is definatly an improvement. Lowend with the b18 is much improved, and so is the midrange. Still has awesome high rpm pull though. AEM shortram gives it a nice sound too.

Engine runs GREAT...purrs like a kitten. Idle is solid, and the engine has no valve tapping noise or anything.

Not the happiest with the b18c gearing though. After driving a b16a2 around alot, I can tell the gearing with that was better. Shifting at redline with the b18c into second seems to drop the car out of the powerband for a second.

Third gear pulls real nice. My only problem, which really does suck is when I shift at high rpms the gear grinds as it goes in!! It still happens when I shift really slow to 3rd if I take the rpms high in second. Kinda sucks considering I paid $4000 for the engine, and it only has 23k miles on it.

Guess that means tranny rebuild this winter, with ats 4.9fd or JDM ITR 4.78fd.

Overall Im really happy with the swap. Tranny thing does **** me off cuz I am getting to the point of which I don't want to spend anymore on the car for a while. I need to take a rest from cars for a little while.

Heres a closing pic with my car and my buddies. GC springs and Koni yellows going on this week so hold back the "looks like a 4 wheeler" comments!

Oh, and a link to the album.

Honda synchros are one of the weakest links...dont' be too pissed off..my cousins 00 Type R motor with 8,000 miles does it...also another friend had a 97 GSR motor with 34,000 miles and his does it....its very common..so dont' be too upset.

The gears on the B16 are alot shorter than the B18C1's.

did my swap this weekend...friday (motor out), sat (new motor in), sunday (wiring and hoses). I worked about 6 hours each day. It was my first swap. If I were to do it again, I think it would take 12 hours of work.

try changing the tranny fluid, might help with the grinding issue....unless its really bad.
