New tires?
So I'm looking to replace the less-than-spectacular stock Michelin 195/55/15's on my '01 GS-R....question is...is there a good enough tire out there that'll fit on those stock rims? And if I decide to go with larger rims, what's the widest tire that'll fit? 205? 215?
u can roll on 205's wit ur stock rims, i have stock 94-95 gsr's and rollin on 205/50/15 kumhos ecsta supra 712's... and they're pretty decent for the money and look like they last a while. there are alot of good tires out there

great grip on those... love em... but wear out too quickly for my poor man's budget.

IMO there is no suck thing as a good all season when you get more than 1 1" snow a year....
at least with a light weight car..... get the kuhmos for summer cause they are cheap yet still decent and get some ws-50's and some 14" steelies for winter...
I will be going to 14" steelies and ws-50's on my teg for winter
(my hatch won't let me cause it will have 11" rotors so i'd have to go with 15" steelies and 195/55/15 snow tires and i am to cheapo for that)
On my hatch I have 205/50/15 Bridgestone potenza S0-3's
nice tires.... (117 per though little Xpensive)

How large is your budget? That is basically the determing factor how good of tires you can get.
Here's a list of tires I would look at depending on your budget. Listed from the softest to the hardest compound.
Falken Azenis - Awesome tire, wears out very quickly, I don't suggest this tire for Cincinnati with all the standing water the improperly designed roads collect.
Bridgestone Potenza S0-3 - Another aweseome tire, best wet tire I've ever seen, has very good dry traction, alot of technology is this tire, wears good for how soft it is. This is my number one choice, unless you are looking for ultimate dry grip.
Yokohama ES-100 - A good all around tire. Basically a step-up from the Kumho, but a step-down from the S0-3.
Kumho Supra 712 - A good long wearing tire. You'll probably get ~30k miles or so out of them. It's very inexpensive.

I got only 18k miles on my Kumhos until they were near-toast factor.
The azenis hold great - but wear out relatively quickly. And the 16's cost significantly more than 15's...even more than the Yoko ES100 (in 16's) I beleive. They are a mighty good deal on 15's however...
I think the Yokos are the best buy - giving near S03 performance (note: not as good though), better wear (than Kumhos or Azenis), and better traction (perhaps equivalent to Azenis, definitely better than Kumho...yuck), for a bit more bank. Worth it

best all-season performance tire that will last at least 30k miles is the BFG Comp T/A. been very good to me on my teg, and they do ok in the snow. we get alot of snow here. never was a problem with the torrential rains we had in houston also. i drive thru canyons or on a major interstate everyday. they don't give up easily and are relatively quiet on the highway. they wore very well and i just put on my second set now (3rd set of tires on the car). the last front set did wear a little prematurely and that was a camber issue with the stock suspension. otherwise, they are great and i highly recommend them. they are reasonalby priced. they are high-quality and reliable tires.
they manage ok in a foot of snow and do well when the plows have run thru, but i use the CR-V or E320 for that weather. otherwise, i would look to dunlop or yoks. also, michelin has a pilot sport all-season tire now.

Have you run both?

I would definitely suggest Dunlop SP Sport A2's. I put these on my car about 9 months ago (right before the winter) and was very pleased. I live in Milwaukee, Wisoconsin, so we get a fair amount of snow........these tires were 100 percent better than the stock Michelin's. They are very solid in the wet also. I know that they are not true "performance" tires, but for my daily driver they serve the purpose quite well........and they didn't break the bank. Check tirerack.com, but I think they are less than 80 a corner.....I got 205/50/15, so slightly wider than stock and I am very pleased. ALso, they should wear a bit longer than some of the other Dunlop's.....but I cannot vouch for that yet. Good luck!
