Default Removing resonator from Mugen exhaust

Would removing the resonator from my mugen cat back make any kind of difference? it would be just a straight pipe back to the muffler then.

don't remoove it. The exhaust sound would be buzzy.

I entertained that thought many times since the friggin Mugen center resonator is about the size of a freaking submarine torpedo.... thing hangs so damn low and even on medium sized speedbumps, stock height...going all sideways over the bump...caused it to get nicked up....

I copped out and sold it to another HT member instead....

I personally don't think it would be buzzy because the heavy *** muffler kills a lot of sound....but who knows.... if I still had my system..I would have probably chopped it by now....OR...replace it with a smaller slimmer resonator... (probably better idea)

I don't know of anyone that has done this...so why don't you do it and then let us know.

Actually, if there is a decent muffler shop in your area, you can have them cut the b-pipe after the resonator and then add flanges to it. If you get a straight section of pipe with flanges as well, you could swap back and forth and just put the straight pipe in for race days.

i had custom bpiping made (straight through) with no cat and sound is still pretty mild..

alot quieter than the n1 exhausts on the market

I'd be interesting in seeing/hearing/feeling how it turns out. Keep us posted!

It's louder and somewhat buzzy. The resonator does it's job so removing will obviously change how it sounds. Personally I think it sounds better with it installed.

Also, consider just replacing the B-pipe all togather, as even though the muffler has a 2.5 inch collector, it bottle necks in the B-pipe, or so I've been told. I left the resonator in on mine, and love the way it sounds. I wouldn't risk making it raspy over 1 whp....

Later,
Aj

It's the b-pipe section before the resonator that is smaller. But I agree for 1-2 whp it isn't worth the extra noise at freeway speeds. I can barely talk on my cell phone while driving as it is.

I know this thread died years ago, the info I have may be useful for someone else who had the same probs. Basically I removed the resonator on my mugen cat back due to it knocking underneath the car.

Whilst I have no dyno to prove it the car felt like it lacked mid range torque and was generally much louder and more offensive. Top end was better but low down was awful, I have a B18C and town driving was nice and smooth, without the resonator I felt I had to work the car a lot.

Anyways it is all back in and back to normal, very noticable difference, even if the dyno says otherwise
