spare helmet on seat
Sometimes I see people riding around with a spare helmet attached to the back of their bike's seat. Is there a special clip piece you need to buy, or do they just bungie the helmet? If it's just rope, where do they put it when the helmet is on someone else's head?
What do you guys recommend for carrying a second helmet with you when you ride (for people you go to pick up who don't have helmets)?

To my knowledge, there's no special "clip" piece. A good method is to tie that extra helmet down with a bungee net. Some bikes have a "helmet bar" where you can tie up the helmet, but that's not very secure when you're riding will bounce around.
If they're using only rope, some bikes have storage units where you can put the rope. Or, just have the passenger hold that sucker.
Tell your passengers to get their own damn helmets.

Depending on the model, bikes have hooks, underneath the passenger seat, where you can slip the D-ring on your helmet. An example of this can be seen on the 2000 GSXR. Im sure a lot more bikes have them...
This is a potentially dangerous thing to do. I would not do it. Having a dangleing object on your bike is a liability. Though not the same risk as a helmet, I have seen people die from having bags/rope slip into the rear wheel/spokes and send the bike into the air at highway speed.
you actually saw this happen and the rider(s) died?? were you riding or diving beside them??

I've got a followup question. I noticed on my seat (cbr f2) there's a leather strap that runs across the top. What if I was to tighten the chinstrap around that leather strap? Will a chip strap stay tight if the helmet isn't around a head?
It will, but it is going to be difficult to get it tight enough. Your F2 has a helmet mount built in. Did you remove it?
I would recommend using a cargo net if you want to put it on top of the passenger seat. It will be tight but most nets will stretch enough to accomodate the helmet. Then you can put the net in you "trunk" when you have a passenger.

the helmet mount is for when the bike is parked. Not for riding with it. Use a bungee net over the back seat. I just give my passanger my helmet. Smartest thing? No, but i very rarly have a passenger anyway

Consider that "leather" strap a good place to park gloves or papers while putting on your helmet. It's not designed to hold weight. The netting is a good option if it can be made to fit well.
Depending on the helmet, the strap should not losen just because it is not being worn. You can use the buckle for securing it.
