I think the drum brakes are supposed to automatically adjust whenever you back up. Or it was something like that...

Yeah definately do it by hand going into reverse to adjust them rarely if ever works. Make sure you have them adjusted good and the going into reverse thing works a bit just to keep them adjusted. But for the initial adjustment do it by hand.

on my friend's eg, there was a rubber grommet on the back side of the drum (the metal plate). you stick a screwdriver in there and you have access to adjust the drum further. after i adjusted the drum, i put the wheel on and made sure the wheel would only make about 1 full rotation, then stop. his brakes worked MUCH better after that.

i have been meaning to do the same on my car, but i have about 1000 other things i need to do first.

Yes it is easy to adjust them. I hate drum brakes too but that was the first set of brakes I worked on as a kid, damn that 71 Nova my Dad used to have! lol

I think they are supposed to adjust when you pull the parking brake.

Take a look at your brake fluid. If it's low then DON'T top it off! When it's low it means your pads/shoes are worn and you need new ones. Maybe stuff has worn out and that's the problem.

what's that got to do with this post?

Sounds like you probably have air bubbles in your lines. Could be the MC as well, but I would figure you would have a more contstant problem rather than intermitant as you seemed to have explained.
