A driving school would be fun, but I don't have that kind of extra money laying around. Get a tuneup, make sure all your fluids are nice an pretty, check the plugs, wires, that stuff. Make sure everything is in good working order before you add any performance stuff.

If everything checks out I'd invest in a CAI, but beware the dreaded hydrolock. Do the research, most people get the CAI but personally I chose the Short Ram for peace of mind.

But, almost definately an intake if you aren't down with the driving school.

CAI = Cold Air Intake.

This is an intake system where the car is fed with cooler air for more power. Generally, each 10 degrees drop in temp = 1% more HP. A filter on a stick aka short ram intake will probably be able suck in more air than a stock system, but if the air is much warmer (like the air in the engine bay), you may not gain much, or even any HP or TQ...

There is usually a compromise, and with the CAI there is usually some threat of "water-suck" where you can get a certain amt of water into your motor. Water doesn't compress very well, so things break.

AEM is prob the most popular CAI, and they offer the Bypass valve to help prevent hydrolock. There is some debate on the efficacy. The Comptech Icebox system is supposed to be much better at preventing hydrolock.

Good luck,
