Bringing my car to the mechanic - What should I replace?
I have an oil leak by the exhaust manifold and cylinder head. I brung my car to my mechanic and he suggested I do a major tuneup which includes replacing the gasket. He gonna replace my sparks, plugs, do an oil & transmission change, etc. Gonna cost about $300. I was also thinking of changing my belts. He told me if I'm gonna do that I should change my water pump also. This is gonna cost $400. Is he pulling my leg. I don't like to do double work so since he doing all these repair should I supply him with aftermarket parts to replace the stock parts. I know I can give him NGK plugs and MSD wires. How about cam gears and sprocket since he gonna change my belts. I know if I supercharge my car I need to upgrade my fuel pump so I shouldn't let him change that. Is there something I should know about the water pump. Sorry for the long post but I need some suggestions.

Um so you mean oil is leaking from your valve cover right... not your header... im not sure that would be possible if so but yeah... gasket is 5 bucks and doesnt take a genious to figure out how to install hehe not callin ya dumb or anything...

mechanics to me are like x girlfriends, the only time i want to see one is when i feel like getting fucked.

why is it going to cost 300 bucks to do an oil change, a tranny oil change, and your plugs... WTF.. I hope he said a valve adjustment, and a free timing belt swap.
dude do you live in so cali, give me 250 bucks and ill buy all the parts with that, and swap all the **** out jebus dude **** mechanics...
I was also thinking of changing my belts. He told me if I'm gonna do that I should change my water pump also.
well its smart to change the pump while you change the belt possibly the pump may have clogged, how many miles do you have and ill let you know if its entirely necessary, i changed my belt at 60 thousand on my si but i didnt change the pump, my car hasnt overheated YET so knocking on wood but the next 60 grand i put on this bitch im changing the pump for sho...
This is gonna cost $400.
man thats like a ps2, gran turismo 3, and a memory card (**** the second player hehe)
Is he pulling my leg. I don't like to do double work so since he doing all these repair should I supply him with aftermarket parts to replace the stock parts.
dude it is not necessary to change your wires unless your stock ones have cracks in them and you shouldnt see any kind of wear like that unless they have about 120 miles on them... other than that you can put that 80 bucks to the pump, try to buy most of your parts from
I know I can give him NGK plugs
the coppers will supply a better spark, but need to be changed every 30 thousand miles, the platinums are made to last longer and deliver a good spark but the coppers would be wisely more recommended from my experience.
MSD wires.
edit.. sorry the best wires period are stock...edit
there are no special gains from aftermarket wires or distributors... btw whens the last time you changed your distributor and fuel filter, whats your milage, and valve adjustments you know your supposed to get those every 15k... those are 120 a pop so id invest in the book and start learning some mechanics hehe.
How about cam gears and sprocket since he gonna change my belts.
buy cam gears if your gonna buy aftermarket cams and dont buy aluminum cam gears either ei- a.e.m, skunk, str... only buy steel - toda, jun.
I know if I supercharge my car I need to upgrade my fuel pump so I shouldn't let him change that.
change the fuel pump when you superchage the car, your gonna **** up the fuel delivery otherwise, your stock car doesnt need it and it doesnt take a genious to replace a fuel pump either.

I guess to be safe change the pump, but 400 bucks my *** hurts just hearing your story man you sound soo lost... my suggestion is after your assreaming save up and buy the service manual for your car and read up on how to perform your self maitanance.
hope i was of some help bro

you need to make sure that your cam seal is not leaking. if that is what it is , which is normally the case, than you can fix it for yourself for under $20-30 or so, very easy job. replace your timing belt if you are over 70,000 and with taht do the water pump and also all the acc. belts. if you need more, IM me.

Yes, those prices sound a little steep. The leak is most likely your valve cover gasket. I had the same problem, and I was getting oil all over the transmission.
See the VIN on the transmission? Yeah, you couldn't come close to seeing that before.. if you're gonna change the timing belt, change the water pump too.
But, yeah, good luck!

yes but still I would recomend to be slightly mechanically inclined because bad things can happen removing your own timing belt off your cams and not putting it back properly...
f.y.i - toda cams (the newer ones) are made out of a high steel quality aluminum, but they are still considered steel in my book

replace your timing belt if you are over 70,000 and with taht do the water pump and also all the acc. belts.
really I wouldnt worry about your power steering, or ac belts, those RARELY get worn, replace those like if your at 200,000 miles VERY RARE to need to change one...
but yeah that should be all I was gonna recommend you ordered half of your parts from handa accessories dot com but i forgot how to spell the web address... lol
whopsie.
try manchester honda

It's leaking from the value cover, so I would need to replace the value cover gasket. A value adjustment was also mention that why it cost $300. My car has 78,000 miles. $400 included water pump and replacing all the belts.

A valve adjustment should be around $100.
